Blue and Yellow make Green!
Give your students a dab of blue paint on one side of a long piece of paper, a dab of yellow on the other side of the paper. Let them fingerpaint awhile, and soon they will discover that when they mix the yellow and blue, they will get green! Let students sprinkle a little gold glitter on their paper in honor of their Saint Patrick's day discovery.
Rainbow Kabobs
For a fun St. Patrick's Day snack, give each student a red strawberry, a piece of orange, a yellow piece of pineapple, a green piece of honeydew melon, a large blueberry, a purple grape, and a kebob stick. Help them put their fruit on the kabob stick in the color order of the rainbow. If you want, give each student a small cup (pot) of lemon yogurt to dip their fruit in.
Marbled Shamrocks
Cut a piece of white paper to fit inside of a shoe box. Add several drops of green paint in different shades to the paper. Put a couple of marbles into the box and return place the lid on the box. Let the students rock the box back and forth, rolling the marbles inside. When they open the box, the paper inside should me a mostly green swirly pattern. When the paper dries, cut out a shamrock shape from their paper and mount it on green or gold cardstock.
Leprechaun Stories
During circle time, read your students a story about leprechauns and tell them that there are many stories about the magical little people called Leprechauns. Explain that leprechauns are very hard to find and even more difficult to catch. If anyone catches a leprechaun, they have to show you where their pot of gold is buried. First, ask your students to share what they would do catch a leprechaun. Then ask if they were a leprechaun, where would they hide their gold.
Find the Pot of Gold
Purchase several rolls of ribbon: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple. Tie each ribbon to the next one in the color order of the rainbow so you have a very long rope. Tie one end to the door at the entrance of your preschool and lead the rest of the rainbow rope through the school ending at a black pot filled with plastic gold coins, plastic gold necklaces, or chocolate coins. Follow the rainbow with your students to the pot of gold and let them take home a few pieces of gold each.
Shamrock Prints
Cut out sponges into heart shapes and let students dip the sponges into green paint and make shamrocks by printing the hearts into sets of three and four. Let them add a stem with a stripe of green paint.
