A stage collapse at the Indiana State Fair was deadly Saturday night. While crowds were waiting in anticipation of hearing country group 'Sugarland' perform, the weather turned deadly. Currently, the official death toll is 4, but so many people were injured and trapped that it is highly likely that the death toll will rise, according to First Sgt. Dave Bursten, Indiana State Police. There was a police briefing held very early today, Sunday.
The Indiana State Fair will be closed today. Can you imagine what it must be like to see the rubble that is left of the stage and to know that people lost their lives? It is only safe to assume that the people who were in the crowd last night when the collapse happened must have been in the state of shock. A state fair is supposed to be a fun place and the crowd was awaiting 'Sugarland' and the fun factor must have been extremely high before the horrible destruction occurred.
It seems that a huge gust of wind came up, which then shook the rigging of the stage. People panicked and were scared. Witnesses say that the weather had not been very bad at all, but this one gust of wind just came up out of nowhere. Two of dead have been unidentified, but no names have been released.
About 24 people were injured with cuts and scrapes as well as more serious injuries. Witnesses said it seemed that everything happened in slow motion, while it actually happened very fast. Unfortunately, you cannot always predict what Mother Nature will throw out and she threw out horrible wind that ended four lives.
The opening act had finished performing and 'Sugarland' had not taken the stage because of the thunderstorm dropping heavy rain on the fair. They are very upset at the collapse of the stage that killed four and injured many others.
'Sugarland' tweeted the following message: "We are all right after our stage collapse at the Indiana State Fair tonight," the website statement said. "Many of our fans and friends in Indianapolis may not be. Please keep them in your thoughts, prayers, or whatever form of strength you are able to send. They need you. Thank you."
Our prayers go out to the families and friends of the victims of this horrible accident at the Indiana State Fair.
