If you're thinking about purchasing a recumbent bike you should consider the Stamina Elite Total Body recumbent exercise bike. Though it is a little expensive (about $660 in most stores) it is an excellent piece of exercise equipment. The followings are some of the good and bad points about this bike.
Pros
The Stamina Elite requires assembly before use but since it doesn't has too many parts you can assemble it quite easily in about an hour. The assembly manual is easy to understand so that helps speed things up too. The assembled unit is compact so you can put it almost anywhere like in the living room facing the TV or facing your garden, etc.
Total body exercise is what this bike all about. There are pedals on the upper side of the bike so you can have both upper and lower body workout at the same time. The recumbent seat is easy to adjust so whether you're short or tall you can still be comfortable riding it.
Pedaling movement feels smooth and it is also very quiet so you won't bother anyone else in the house when exercising. With 24 tension levels you can bet that this would fit your needs. Even the 15th level is already a huge challenge for average bikers.
Stamina made a nice touch by giving away free Polar Heart-rate sensor with this bike. The sensor sends information of your heart rate to the on-board computer wirelessly. The computer can also save your workout history so you can see if you're making a progress or not.
Cons
Although you can use the upper and lower pedals simultaneously the upper ones give no resistance when you're using them at the same time. You only get resistance on the upper pedals when the lower ones are not in use.
Conclusion
If you're serious about getting a good low-impact exercise for both your upper and lower body the Stamina Elite Total Body recumbent bike would make a fine choice. Though it's quite expensive for a home exercise bike the benefit you get will make it worth the money you spend.
