Stand Up to Cancer with the Stars of Hollywood

Rosa Hayes
Stand Up to Cancer is making way to the television network rivals; NBC, ABC, and CBS in an effort to raise money to fund research for all types of cancer. Stand Up to Cancer will simultaneously be broadcast on the selected television networks and will be loaded with Hollywood A-listers such as Meryl Streep, Chalize Theron, Lance Armstrong, David Cook and many other famous stars. Among those who will be helping in the broadcast is CBS's own Katie Couric, whose husband died of cancer and NBC's Brian Williams and for ABC there will be guest Charles Gibson who will be reporting on cancer research. The show has been in the making for a while and was announced in May. The time of the Stand Up to Cancer's show will be aired at 8 p.m. EDT and PDT on September 5, as reported by Reuters.

Stand Up to Cancer is not the only show that has been held to help in donations. American Idol holds a donation broadcast every year on the show to help in different areas and circumstances.

Why are shows like Stand Up to Cancer held?

Stand Up to Cancer is being held so that the research on cancer can continue and maybe one day they will find a cure for cancer. Since the research on cancer has begun, there has been a lot less overall percentage of people die from cancer. Without the research on cancer the percentage of people dying from cancer related illnesses would rise or stay the same. The goal behind Stand Up to Cancer is to get the research on cancer funded so that they can continue the valuable research needed to make treatments better, detect cancer earlier, and find more ways of protecting people from it. Without programs and television broadcast like Stand Up to Cancer, we might not be able to get the research done that we need.

What are some other ways to get more money for this fundraiser?

I had an idea that worked out pretty well when I was trying to come up with money for another research program. I call this fundraiser that I did a community fundraiser since it involves the entire community. What you can do is ask the people in your community to donate their change or to give a dollar to help fund the fundraiser Stand Up to Cancer. If each person in your community gave a dollar, the amount of money that you gave would be larger than if you were doing it alone. For this community fundraiser to work you would need to call in and donate under the name of your community instead of under just one person's name.

Another idea to help you get money is to go around door to door and ask people for their pennies to donate to Stand Up to Cancer. You will probably be surprised at how many people will willingly give you their pennies since pennies don't hold a lot of value and they do add up after a while.

About Cancer

Cancer is what is known as a silent killer. Most people who get cancer will not notice it until it becomes more advanced. It is recommended that a person has regular check-ups and physical exams to check for cancer and other health related problems. Cancer comes in many forms. Some cancers can be treated if caught early enough but the treatment is often painful. Stand Up to Cancer is raising money so that the research can continue and maybe someday cancer will become nonexistent.
