According to Staples Center, there were 500 million hits on their website in the first hour after they announced lottery plans for Michael Jackson memorial tickets. 11,000 free Jackson tickets are available for the Staples Center memorial, with 6,500 free tickets set aside for the simulcast at Nokia Theater.
Most fans probably want the Staples Center Michael Jackson tickets, but the odds stand to be pretty long now. Still, 11,000 lucky people will get those tickets from the Staples Center, when the lottery is held later tonight.
On Sunday, 8,750 people will be contacted to get their two free tickets, either for the Staples Center memorial or the Nokia Theater telecast. Afterward, they will get instructions to get their tickets, and a special wristband.
There is still time to be eligible for Staples Center and Nokia Theater Michael Jackson tickets, however. Fans have until 9 p.m. Eastern, 6 p.m. Pacific to register at staplescenter.com. At this point, putting in someone's name would be like putting a needle in a haystack.
The fact that there has to be a lottery to attend a memorial service, and that a sports and concert arena is hosting it, says it all. Staples Center was the last place Michael Jackson ever rehearsed at, and now it gets to put on an even bigger show than any concert, with even greater demand for tickets.
Even the fact that so many tickets are free doesn't matter, considering the hype around it - and considering that Staples Center still charged money for the other 9,000 or so tickets at the memorial.
For those who don't get to go to Staples Center or Nokia Theater, the memorial service will undoubtedly be on all of the cable networks, so they will get to see it in some fashion - as they have seen every other step of the Jackson mourning process live.
