Staples Sonix Retractable Gel Ink Pens: Product Review

Lori Voth
I wasn't sure what to expect when I ordered the Staples Sonix Retractable Gel Ink Pens from Staples online. I tend to be fairly particular about the pens I write with. Whether its journaling, notes to self on post it pads or writing freelance articles, the right pen can make all the difference in my mood and influence the written result.

I'm always on the prowl for new pens to try; I have a special fondness toward those offered in assorted colors and gel pens.

When I was browsing Staples.com for the latest gel ink pens I found two items I liked: The Staples Sonix Gel Ink Pens, Medium Point, Assorted Colors and the Staples Sonix Retractable Gel Ink Pens, Medium Point, Assorted Colors.

Both were reasonably priced and stylish in appearance. But I was also weary of the Staples brand. While I believe the majority of the Staples brand office supply products to be high in quality, I had not had the best of luck with their pens. After comparing a few other gel pens for sale, I decided to take a chance and buy the Staples brand and just make a point to return them if they proved unsatisfactory.

I selected the retractable gel ink pens over the non retractable ones. Both offered one dozen pens in assorted colors only the non retractable pens required a cap to properly close. Even though these were $1 cheaper I did not want to worry about the pens drying out due to a loosened cap as I had with pens in the past. The retractable option solves this problem.

The Staples Sonix Retractable Gel Ink Pens were delivered to me a few days later. The pens are impressive.

Below are some attributes of Staples Sonix Retractable gel pens I most appreciate:

Comfortable Grip:: The rubber around the pen feels smooth with just enough flexibility and makes for a cushioned support while writing.

Color Variety: The Staples Sonix gel pen pack comes in black, blue, red, green, purple, lime, orange, cobalt blue, forest green, antique red, mustard and navy. The darker colors are rich. The lighter colors are bright but solid and visible.

Ink Flow: Writing with this pen is a calming and enjoyable, effortless experience. The pen rolls well on the page. It should be noted, though, that it does take these pens a little time to flow smoothly and properly; upon the first few uses they felt a bit stiff and dry.

Smear Factor: Ink on the page dries immediately and does not smudge or smear.

Ink Conservation: The pen's retractable tip makes it less likely for ink to leak or dry out.

Weight of Pen: The Sonix Retractable Gel Pens were the perfect weight and bulk for my writing needs. The pens were of just the right heaviness to allow for excellent control of the pen and they even made it easier for me to write legibly (my handwriting tends to not be the greatest, I confess.)

These pens work great for all writing purposes. I highly recommend them to anyone who finds the attributes I mentioned above similar to their own needs and requirements for a pen.

The Staples Sonix Retractable Gel Ink Pens can be purchased online at Staples.com for
$9.49. Or even better, you can search for it in your local Staples store and avoid the shipping fees as well as try them out.
