Star Trek Box Office Prediction Coming True with Opening Numbers Coming In

The New Star Trek Movie Had Its Premiere on Thursday and Has Brought in Millions Already

Star Trek box office predictions are already ringing true as the premiere night receipts are starting to role in. Early estimates for the opening night Star Trek box office receipts show that the movie brought in just over $7 million. This was on a limited number of screens at theaters that decided to show the new Star Trek a little early, and it has seemed to pay off big time for those theaters. With so many fans excited about the re-birth of the franchise, a lot of people turned out to the premiere showings, even though they were all late at night.

The Star Trek box office totals are only expected to increase, as a total of 3,849 locations will be showing Star Trek on Friday. That's quite a few in total, and more than any of the previous Star Trek films was able to garner. In fact, most of the prior films were shown on just around 2,000 screens, showing that with the new film, there is an expected turn out from a new audience. That was the plan when J.J. Abrams took over the Director's chair for the film too, and he brought in quite a few young and attractive actors in order to create a new following. It seems he has really succeeded on all fronts, as people are turning out in droves to take a look at the new film.

Counting all ten of the first group of Star Trek films, the highest box office total that one of them was able to achieve was $109,713,132 back in 1986. That film was Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, and the movie took place mostly in the present day planet Earth as the Enterprise crew was sent back in time. That is the only film of the group to pass the all-important $100 million mark, and could actually be surpassed with one great weekend from the new movie. That is quite a good mark for a franchise that was struggling recently to the tune of only $43 million in box office receipts for the last chapter. Using the Star Trek: The Next Generation crew, 2002's Star Trek: Nemesis didn't quite have the following that producers were hoping for.

Many consider Friday night being the official day for the Star Trek opening, and it may draw a large number of fans interested in seeing where the franchise is heading. It has some competition in theaters still, as X-Men Origins: Wolverine is heading into its second week in theaters, and several comedies are already in place hoping to draw other viewers. With an exorbitant budget to produce and advertise the film, Star Trek has a ways to go before it will turn a profit, but if opening night was any sign of things to come, the franchise may be off to the races.
