Star Trek Characters Take Off to Brave New Worlds and Beyond

Kirk Just as Expected, Spock and Uhura Relationship is Fuel for Speculation

The new Star Trek movie , while grossing over $76 million on opening weekend, uses an old device of an alternate timeline to take us into the bold new world of the Star Trek franchise. It is fabulously done every step of the way. With the assistance of a fantastic cast, the re-crafting of a classic storyline has taken place before our eyes and a new generation of Trekkies have been born.

I grew up watching the original series of Star Trek and the adventures of James T. Kirk and his crew of space hero's. Every day after school I watched as Star Trek went in search of bold new worlds, where no man had gone before. I ordered the Star Trek phasers and communication devices through the mail and played Star Trek with the neighborhood kids in my backyard.

I sat in the theater drawn into the action on the new Star Trek screen from minute one of what J.J. Abrams has done with my childhood heroes. Captain James Kirk is exactly as I would have expected him to be as a young man - predictably unpredictable and strong-willed.

Spock on the other hand presented as a much more complex character than I would have imagined. We had always known the conflict of Spock as he is half-human and half-Vulcan. However, by the time we were introduced to Spock in the Star Trek series he was primarily a creature of logic, we always knew Spock to be drawn to the logical conclusion.

Here we meet a Spock that is conflicted, vulnerable and actually makes emotional decisions at critical points. There is also a totally unexpected supposed relationship with one very sexy Lt. Uhura. In "Star Trek land" the Captian always gets the girl, not Spock. But J.J Abrams and his minions have truly led us into brave new world territory here with the Spock/Uhura relationship.

While Spock does not exactly welcome her obvious advances in multiple spots throughout the movie, he does not push her away either. There definitely seems to be a relationship of feelings there, but I for one was surprised to see this. This twist will help to ensure that a new generation of Star Trek fanfic writers will have plenty of material to work with.

The good Doctor McCoy was exactly as I would have expected him to be. Straight forward and to the point, brash at times and he always spoke what he was thinking. He added an element of humor to Star Trek just as I would have expected.

I was looking forward to my time in the movie theater with buttered popcorn, shutting out the world and just enjoying a couple hours of Star Trek great fun. What I got was much, much more. I watched the re-birth of a legend, the Star Trek franchise is alive and well and now positioned to find even more brave new worlds as the saga of the USS Enterprise and her crew will continue.
