From the end of the last book, only a little information was known about what was going to take place. It was known that Ben Skywalker would continue looking for his mothers killer, and it was known that Jaina solo was going to look for the infamous Boba Fett to help train her to kill Jedi. Sounds interesting, maybe even entertaining.
In my opinion, the book fell absolutely flat. There was only a few minutes of reading that really gripped my attention, there was only a few twist coming I didn't see.
Be warned, if you haven't read the book, the following may be a spoiler to read.
This books largest failure was the Boba Fett angle. They are dragging this whole internal conflict with Boba and his granddaughter too far. Boba is a bounty hunter, the most feared in the galaxy, and yet he spends most of the book obsessing over his wife, who isn't really dead, but frozen in carbonite for over 30 years, and trying to convince his granddaughter to be happy in marriage. He doesn't handle most of Jaina's training, leaving it to supporting characters. He also just doesn't seem very bounty hunter-like. He seems to have no real desire to kill Jacen, he is too caught up in his own internal struggles.
The constant political intrigue makes this book seem to be written concerning the old republic instead of the current Galactic Alliance. Wheels within wheels, including Admiral Niathal who fusses over the death of a few soldiers that she set up to have killed. The addition of Tahiri as the new Sith apprentice was somewhat surprising. By surprising, as in how casual she accepted her role in the situation. Poor Tahiri, after all she went through at the hand of the Vong, its disappointing to see her dragged down like this. And her murder of Admiral Paellon was uncalled for. With the return of Admiral Daala, it appears the storyline is heading towards a rebirth of the old empire.
Now, the few bright sides. Jacen was once again reminded he is not Luke's equal, in either flying, or use of the force. And the way young Ben pulls clues together and gets the proof against Jacen he needs was well done.
All in all, read this book if you must know, but honestly, if you skip this and go to the last book, I doubt you will miss much.
