Starbucks Closing List for Massachusetts, New England

Pam Gaulin
The Starbucks closing list has been released. Is your favorite Massachusetts Starbucks store on the list? On July 2, 2008, Starbucks announced it were closing 600 Starbucks stores. Today, the company published the much-anticipated list of Starbucks closings. Here is the list of Starbucks closings for Massachusetts. Included are the Starbucks store closings for Maine, New Hampshire and Connecticut. There are no Starbucks closings listed for Vermont or Rhode Island.

Starbucks Closings List: New England

New Englanders who are loyal to the home-grown Dunkin Donuts may not be phased by these Starbucks store closings in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine and Hew Hampshire.

Massachusetts

There are a total of seven Starbucks stores closing in Massachusetts.

Travelers will be disappointed to learn that the Turnpike Burlington location, located at 47 Middlesex Turnpike in Burlington, Massachusetts will be closing.

Shoppers in Massachusetts will miss these locations:

Dartmouth Mall, Dartmouth, Massachusetts
Emerald Square Mall, 999 South Washington Street, North Attleboro, Massachusetts
Shrewsbury Street Marketplace, 222 Shrewsbury Street in Worcester, Massachusetts

Also closing are these locations:

Newton Centre, 70 Union Street, Newton, Massachusetts
Sharon, Five Post Office Square, Sharon, Massachusetts
and Stoughton, 425 Washington Street, Stoughton, Massachusetts

Connectiuct: Five Starbucks Stores Closing

After Massachusetts, Connecticut will be losing the largest number of upscale coffee locations. The Connecticut closings are:

Prospect Hill, 137 Prospect Hill Road, East Windsor, Connecticut
1201 King's Way, 1201 King's Highway, Fairfield, Connecticut
Wethersfield Avenue, 692 Wethersfield Avenue, Hartford, Connecticut
Evergreen Walk, 301 Evergreen Way, South Windsor, Connecticut
Windsor Locks, 209 Ella Grasso Turnpike, Windsor Locks, Connecticut

Maine

Both closings in Maine are in Bangor. They are at Bangor Mall, 663 Stillwater Avenue and Bangor Broadway at 652 Broadway.

New Hampshire

The Granite State will lose one coffee stop located at Rochester Shoppes, 160 Washington Street in Rochester, New Hampshire.

Vermont

Vermont is home to three stores, according to the company's web site. All three stores will remain open.

Jobs for Displaced Starbucks Employees

Can a former Starbucks employee make the transition to working at Dunkin Donuts? Would it be like an employment transition from Macy's to Target?

Dunkin Donuts

Displaced employees who will not be moved to another Starbucks location can try applying at the local Dunkin Donuts franchise. Dunkin Donuts has more basic offerings, but a Starbucks-trained employee should be able to handle the less-regimented serving rules.

Bartending

The exacting nature of making specialty coffees and beverages may have trained the former employee for a job in bartending. Do you enjoy mixing drinks and beverages to people's exact specifications? Do you like working with the public?

Open a Local Coffee shop

While it may seem counter-intuitive to open your own coffee shop business on the heels of a Starbucks closing in your area. However, your local area may be in need of a local cafe with the local closings.

Offer people an alternative to current local coffee shop menus. Sugar-free options and decaf options may be an untapped consumer need in your area. Offering additional services including Internet access or online ordering may also boost local sales.

Adding local artwork and art show openings as well as open mic nights can also be a boon to business.

Jon, thanks the for the comment. I prefer locally-owned coffee shop myself.

Starbucks is badly needed in New England where the ubiquitous Dunkin' Donuts likely is spreading cancer and bad vibes with George W. Bush-style abandon!

I was stunned when I read in the local paper that some folks in Newton were protesting the closing there and had started a petition. Never expected to see Starbucks as a passionate cause for citizen action.

Well, since their CEO came back, things will change.

Very helpful for people in the area :)

I wonder if any of ours around here are closing?

Great info for people in the area!

I love the local bistras here...and we have two Starbucks, but it's a sad thing for the workers...good benefits and all.

DD may not attract the same crowd, but I like the atmosphere of local coffee shops the best :-)

The real downside on these closings is not just the loss of convenient, albeit pricey, places for coffee or, even, the associated loss of jobs. The real downside is the loss of a place for socialization and businessization (is that a word?). Dunkin' D just doesn't attract the same 'crowd'.... M
