Starbucks Coffee - Reducing the Guilt: Tips for Reducing Your Calories, Fat, and Sugar Intake

Don't Ditch the Drink - Look at Your Options

Victoria Wright
We all know those delicious Starbucks coffees we're all downing aren't only costly, but detrimental to any diet you may be on. I'll be honest - I don't think we'll ever find a way to squeeze a Starbucks coffee into any of your diet plans completely guiltlessly, but you can adjust your order to make it a little more diet and calorie-conscious. The following five tips are simple ways to reduce the calories, fat and the guilt in your favorite Starbucks beverage.

Say "No Whipped Cream Please"

Simply leaving off the whipped cream can reduce the calories by anywhere from 80 to 130 calories alone! Refraining from adding whipped cream will also reduce the fat content by 8 to 12 grams.

Order a Frappuccino Light

You may not be aware of this but Starbucks offers a Light Frappuccino. By simply asking your barista to use their Light Frappuccino base, you will save up to 140 calories and 2.5 grams of fat!

Try A Calorie-Free Sweetener

When ordering you can request that your favorite refreshment be made with a calorie-free sweetener. Take your pick between Sweet'N Low, Splenda or Equal.

Ask For A Sugar-Free Syrup

Starbucks does offer two sugar-free syrups. Order a vanilla or hazelnut flavored beverage and ask for the sugar-free syrup. Their sugar-free syrups add 0 calories and 0 grams of fat too!

Order With Reduced-Fat or Skim Milk

You could save up to a whopping 140 calories and 19 grams of fat by choosing a reduced-fat milk or skim milk to be used in your drink.

Ask For Soymilk or Organic Milk

Starbucks offers both Soymilk and Organic milk as options for your favorite drink. Soymilk is vitamin and calcium enriched, plus its cholesterol and lactose-free. Organic milk is antibiotic-free and rBST-free, but is still fortified with the vitamin D you want.

Try A Low-Cal or Non-Coffee Beverage

Starbucks offers 12 hot and 9 cold beverages that are all less than 200 calories, with many having less than 100 and little to no fat. Some options, like brewed Tazo Tea, have 0 calories and 0 grams of fat. Ask your barista what some low-calorie options are, or just stop by the rack and pick up a "Nutrition By The Cup" flyer - all the info you'll need is right there at your fingertips!
