In spite of a declining world economy and the crippling closure of approximately 600 stores in the US, coffee giant Starbucks appears to be holding brisk business overseas - in China namely.
With 13,000 storefronts in nearly 50 countries worldwide, on January 14, 2009, Starbucks celebrated its first 10 years in the Chinese market with the welcome of its new "South of the Clouds" coffee line. Starbucks first opened its doors in the Chinese mainland in 1999, and it now boasts an excess of 350 stores spanning 26 cities.
CHINA-GROWN COFFEE TO BE SOLD WORLDWIDE
Starbucks Coffee International President Martin Coles recently stated, "Ultimately I'd love to see our coffees from China feature on the shelves of every one of our stores in 49 countries around the world." Cole spoke directly of China's lush southern province of Yunnan, wherein Starbucks' new flagship coffee brand will be grown.
A schedule of the new brand's foreign distribution has not yet been pegged, as planning for the supply of enough beans to match China's domestic and overseas demand have not been ironed out. "Our intention is to work with the officials and the farmers in Yunnan province to bring Chinese coffee not (only) to China, but Chinese coffee to the world," Coles further offered.
THE NEW "SOUTH OF THE CLOUDS" BLEND
The new "South of the Clouds" line blends local Yunnan beans with arabica from the Asia-Pacific and Latin America regions. Starbucks hopes to work up a super premium arabica coffee from Yunnan to compliment the primarily foreign-based derivatives it currently sells to its market in China.
Coles did not share Starbucks' plans for China in 2009, but with the opening of 40 more stores in China for 2008, growth within the mainland looks encouraging.
Have fun!
