Starbucks to Offer Free One-Click WiFi

J. R. Steele
Following in the footsteps of McDonald's, Starbucks is reducing the costs of Wi-Fi internet access from $2.95 to the customer-friendly price of $0. That's right... FREE. Just announced today by company CEO Howard Schultz at WIRED's Business Conference Disruptive by Design, Starbucks is set to begin offering its customers free one-click access to Wi-Fi on July 1, 2010 through the AT&T wireless network service. The free service only applies to U.S. company operated locations. This tasty tidbit of info has also been released on the Starbucks website in their News section. There has been no statement regarding how this affects franchise or non-U.S. based company locations.

Starbucks is positioning this move as a part of their efforts to embrace social and digital media while providing customers with a better in store Wi-Fi experience. Coincidentally, they have announced plans for a new online customer experience called the Starbucks Digital Network, in partnership with Yahoo! that will be rolled out later this fall. Also available only in U.S. company operated Starbucks stores, the new Starbucks Digital network will offer unique and exclusive content that will allow customers free unrestricted access to various paid sites and services such as wsj.com, exclusive content and previews, free downloads, local community news and activities, on any Wi-Fi enabled device. This piece of the empire will be piloted by Digital Ventures, a new business unit within Starbucks.

All in all, it looks like everybody wins in this one. Free Wi-Fi access is always a nice plus for customers. Especially with more and more mobile/portable devices with Wi-Fi capabilities. For Starbucks, customers may be inclined to stay a little longer and purchase a little more simply because they do not want to disconnect from the information super highway. The website content providers will enjoy access to Starbucks' large customer-base which will possibly increase their exposure to customers to which they otherwise may not have access.

Now only if they would reduce the price of that Starbucks Coffee, we'd be good to go!!!

This may make Starbucks a cheap co-working space too.

hm. If I had a laptop that might just be tempting enough to draw me into a Starbucks.

Been getting free WiFi (in N. Cal) for a couple of years - you DO have to use a Starbuck's card at least once every couple of months and you get two hours at a pop...ATT. Not the fastest, but pretty reliable!
