StarCraft 2- How to Get a Free Trial

But Beware of All the Issues..

Michael Grisso
Outside of World of Warcraft's Cataclysm due out later in the year, Starcraft 2 has to be the most anticipated online game of the year. After all, it's been about 12 years since the original version was released. All you middle-agers out there; it's like playing the original Pac-Man and then seeing a more glorified option over a decade later.

Okay, that's a complete lie and you definitely can't compare the two, but as of right now there are 11 million + Starcraft 2 players. Really? Personally I never heard of the game, but I was intrigued and wanted to learn how everyone was enjoying it on release.

The Starcraft II Forum

So I headed over to the community forum to find out how great the game was and whether or not they had a free trial. I mean as big as this is, an experienced player could get loads of work in my profession. Unfortunately I didn't come across anything I had hoped to see.

The Complaints

Once the game was released, the first signs of trouble were posts about constantly getting kicked out of the game. Any online gamer knows this is extremely frustration, especially if you put in the work only to be kicked. It's basically just wasting time.

In the early afternoon I went back over to the Starcraft II forum and saw posts coming up about not being able to log in properly. Various people were purchasing the game, using the key, and then the Battle.net was messing up somewhere in between.

There were several others as well, but some of them are just minor things that give people a reason to complain. A great example of this is the Starcraft 2 digital download option. Normally the creators (Blizzard Entertainment), provide you with a discount for ordering a digital download.

However, they didn't today and there were some people getting irritated by it. Personally it's not surprising since it's the first day of release. If I owned the game I'd charge full price all the way around as well.

So What's Good about the Game?

Well, I really didn't see too many compliments except for the graphics and design area. Gamers loved the new look, the cinematic trailer, and the cool single player mode available. In fact, it was so well received that many posts suggested they wouldn't play multiplayer until single player was complete.

How to Get a Free Trial

When I first got up this morning and sipped on my venti white chocolate mocha from Starbucks, I tried to figure out how to get a free trial for Starcraft 2. Honestly, I was assuming that Blizzard would offer this and I could start learning today.

It didn't happen, and if you've been searching for one yourself you can stop wasting your time. However, there is another way to get a guest pass, but it requires a little work. Go to Craigslist or any other similar site and look for any posts where someone purchased the game retail.

Individuals who bought Starcraft 2 in the store receive 2 "guest passes" for anyone who wants to play. Throughout the day I searched Google and found places where individuals were giving them away for free and they were being snatched up in seconds.

Heck, at this point it's even possible to make a few bucks from it if people really wanted to maximize the supply and demand here.

Should You Buy it Now?

If it was me, I would spend the time looking for one of the "guest passes" first. Blizzard is well known for creating tons of games and just as many problems when they first get started. World of Warcraft players know all about this, as well as other online gamers around the world.

Then again, maybe you're the individual who has to have everything when it comes out. In that case you can purchase the game on their main website, Amazon, Battle.net, and a host of other places. The cost to purchase Starcraft 2 is $59.99.

Unfortunately Blizzard does not come out with clean games. Every Tuesday there is maintenance, constant glitches, and several issues that need to be covered.

Just because something has a huge following doesn't mean there are no problems.

When the game was first released it was the players who were complaining about issues.

Just hop over to any of them. I wasn't stating my opinion here. I was giving you the facts based on the information I found.

Have you ever played a Blizzard game? They come out very clean for both Mac and PC. They only really have three titles that keep expanding and all of them have a huge following. Never compare the server needs of an MMO to an RTS. Two entirely different beasts. I normally wouldn't comment on these posts but; 1) your opinion is wrong. 2) You mentioned getting a drink and Starbucks in a video game article.

I have to agree with Mike on this one. Blizzard puts out very polished software from day one. They will tweak settings for game balance, but from a bug/crash perspective, they consistently put out some of the best, stable, polished software around.

"Blizzard is well known for creating tons of games and just as many problems when they first get started."

I can't disagree more. I've been playing Blizzard games (and there really aren't that many) since Warcraft 1. They don't spend 12 years on something for nothing. I installed it the first time and it's ran absolutely flawlessly. I've played WoW for 3 years, and have had the game crash on me maybe twice. Blizzard's game are some of the most polished in the whole gaming industry. If you're only hesitation in buying SC2 is worrying about bugs or crashing, you've got the wrong idea.

UPDATE: Yesterday I went to the local GameStop and talked with the employees about Starcraft 2. They said that there were individuals standing outside the store waiting for people to buy the game, and then ask those individuals to buy their guest pass key code.

Just another option, but I imagine their will be loitering issues if this continues.
