Zergling Rush

Damon C Dennis
When a Starcraft player rushes an opponent he is trying to end the game fast. The success rate of killing your opponent with a rush is low among equal players. More often then not all that will happen is the attacked player will be crippled giving you a drastic advantage. Here is how to do it playing as Zerg.

First things first. Never rush on a map you have never played. it could take a while to find them and the element of an early attack will be wasted. there is also the chance you are on an island map, thus a rush is impossible. If at all possible know your enemy. It is easier to rush a terran player than a protoss player. (In my opinion although im sure some will disagree) You find out the race of your opponent before the game when they choose their race, unless they select random.

If you do not know the race of your opponent rush at your own risk.

I say terran are the weakest because a zealot will tear through lings like they arent even there. Sometimes when you rush players will see that you are zerg and will prepare for a possible rush.

Once the game starts send your drones to mine minerals. select with left click, right click minerals. I say this because it is faster than selecting with the hotkeys.

Notice your top right corner minerals:0 supply: 4/9

Send your overlord to locate their command center, commanly known as CC

also hotkey your hatchery. select ----> ctrl+1 and hot key a larvae select ---------> ctrl +2

the moment you see your minerals hit 50 press 2 and 'D' supply 5/9

it will build a drone with out you having to be at location

next wait for the drone to hatch, (optional) if you get another 50 minerals then build one more drone supply 6/9

Hotkey a drone select -------> ctrl+3

the moment your mineral supply equals 200 then press 3 then 'S'

and build a spawning pool anywhere on the creep (purple stuff) as long as it doenst get in the way of the minerals Supply 4/9 or 5/9

as the spawning pool grows build one or two more drones depending on your supply. you want it to read 6/9. You should have 6 drones, one hatchery and one spawning pool in development and one overlord

You may be tempted to get another overlord as your minerals reach 100. Dont, you need your minerals to reach 150 when the spawning pool reaches completion and you need to have three larvae at the same time, building an overlord, aka ovie will limit your number of lings by 2, if that doesnt sound like much that will be 33% of your lings

Once your spawning pool is built press 1 then 'S' then 'Z'

6 lings will be produced. supply is now 9/9

Now what you must do immediately after the lings are created attack the enemy. what some players do is they send a couple of drones to distract the enemy. What this does is act as cannon fodder basiclly. they will take the first few hits as your lings deal the damage

What happens next is up to your reactions to their actions. Here are a few possible Scenarios:

One: they were prepared and they destroy your force, you should abort the rush tactic and prepare for a counter attack

Two: you are dealing alot of damage but their SCVs/probes are killing your units. They wont be able to keep up this defence, keep a constant stream of lings coming and you should win

Three: They lift their buildings and try to fly away, have your ovie and lings follow. buildings are worthless untill they land. they have to land sometime, then you kill them

Four: the run away with their SCVs/Probes and try to start a new base somewhere else unknown to you. if you destroy every building that you can see of theirs then they must have done this. spread out and find them, this is another reason it is good to play on a map you already know. they will be so far behind you can kill them easy

Five: You win, either they quit or watch you mercilessly destroy them

Note: There are many variations to the zergling rush, every one of them has their flaws and not one of them will work every time. A sucessful rush requires practice and a little bit of luck

  • Use hotkeys
Watch your supply, if you go over you will not be able to create more units, too many drones will cause a failed or delayed rush
