Clearance Sales and Other Bargains
By starting early, everyday can be an opportunity to check someone else off of your Christmas shopping list. Take advantage of the many clearance specials and holiday sales (such as 4th of July, Labor Day, Columbus Day, etc) to pick up great deals. Not only are the prices great, but also you have a larger selection because not many other people are thinking about Christmas and grabbing things for their own carts. In addition, many seasonal items will be gone by Christmas. For example, if you have someone who loves gardening on your list, it's not always easy to locate good gardening items for a gift in December. By watching for summer clearances you can get some exciting choices.
Another super way to get some hot deals on Christmas gifts to put up for later is by watching online retailers' clearances. Between now and Christmas, many of these online stores will have the same types of sales and many times offer coupon code discounts and free shipping. One of the best places to keep track of all of this is at www.flamingoworld.com. This website updates daily with all the coupon codes and such that you will need to snag some great bargains.
Thrifty and Unusual
It may seem odd at first, but there is a goldmine of Christmas gifts to be had by shopping at yard sales and secondhand stores. Starting now will give you plenty of time to peruse and find the absolute best of the best in gifts using this method. Many times you can come across unused, new items at these locations that have nothing wrong with them. Perhaps someone received something as a gift, themselves, and did not want it. They, in turn, sell it at their yard sale or donate it to their local Goodwill. From nice new clothing with the tags still on to jewelry boxes still in the crate, this method is an exciting way to find something unique and cheap. Just be very careful to inspect what you are going to purchase to be sure it is not damaged.
The online equivalent of this method is by using online auctions, such as Ebay. By starting now you can have plenty of time to find unusual collectibles or items for the difficult person on your list. Since it is not Christmas, many auctions end with no bids. Always be sure to check out the "auctions ending first" and jump on it as the time is dwindling. This method is great for small children's gifts such as gently used clothing or toys that someone's kid didn't play with. A nice gift box will make a lovely and frugal gift!
Using Your Online Purchases For More Gifts
There are many online points-for-purchase programs out there who will give you points when you click on and purchase your items by going through their website. One I particularly like is www.mypoints.com. If you will be purchasing something that is listed on their site (Ebay, for example) then you will get points for every dollar you spend. In turn, you redeem the points for gift cards and certificates to restaurants and stores. If you are going to buy items online, you might as well get credit to get free gifts!
Homemade Ideas
Many great Christmas gifts are homemade and that can mean time involved that you don't always have at the last minute. With a little forethought and care, you can make some of your Christmas presents that will be cherished for years to come. If you have a digital camera, compile picture collections into a scrapbook for grandparents. If you are good with crafts, consider making someone special a quilt, afghan, or similar item that requires a bit of time to put together. Soaps and candles are always a hit and by giving yourself some time you can come up with some great ideas. Gift baskets are popular and you can take your time through the next several months and collect just the right items to put into it.
One unusual gift idea is a small kitchen herb garden. Most gardening stores are starting to put their seeds and plants on clearance. Pick up some nice containers, dishes, pots, or baskets from thrift stores and use them to start these herb gardens with a bit of potting soil. By starting the herb gardens now while it is warm, they will have a great foothold by winter and will provide usefulness and beauty to your friends and family who like to cook.
It's never too early to get a jump on Christmas preparations. Save yourself time and lots of money by thinking about it now.

Really great advice...it really takes the fun out of Christmas when you wait until the last minute(which I have been known to do!) Thanks for the motivation Alice!
Never thought about starting this soon before but hey if I get everyone else out of the way now, I can shop for myself during the Christmas shopping season!
Oh my gosh Alice. Every year I promise myself that I am going to do something like this and I never do. Thank you for the information and inspiration. I'll let you know if I carry it through.
What excellent advice you've given! I'm going to really give Christmas some serious thought now. I've been such a last minute shopper in the past. Thank you. :-)
This is such wise advice but if I changed my loved ones would call the Feds claiming the real me was abducted by aliens. I'm SO bad that one year I did all the chistmas shopping and all the dinner shopping (big turkey dinner) on Christmas Eve!
My wife and I have been known to buy Christmas stuff early too. Every year on my radio show (which I hope to start airing again in July), I always refer to June 25th as "half past Christmas", which I stress should be when people start their holiday shopping.
This is great advice! I try to start my Christmas shopping early every year. It drives my husband crazy because we have a closet full of stuff already.
Great ideas! Doing this helps take the stress out of the holiday season, for sure.
