In our article, "How to Start an Internet Business", we looked at the different ways in which you can start your own Internet business. Now that you have an idea of the type of Internet based business you want to start, you need a website.

Having your own website allows you to establish your own unique presence on the Internet. Your website is what will set your Internet business apart from the competition. It is important to differentiate yourself from others so that you will have a targeted audience that is highly interested in your specific offerings.

The first step in establishing your Internet business website is to choose a domain name. Your domain is the web address for your website. This is how your audience will find you. Choose a domain name that reflects your business. You will register your domain with a domain registrant.

You will need a web host to get your website published. A web host is a company that stores the pages and files from your website. A good web hosting company will offer a variety of packages, domain registration, an integrated website builder, 99.9% uptime, and good customer support services.

Once you have your domain registered and have choose your web hosting company it is now time to start thinking about what you want on your website. You nee d to really put on your thinking cap here and determine who your target audience is and what they want to accomplish at your website. Your goal is to solve problems and provide content on your website that will help your readers. Let's break this down by the type of Internet business you chose.

Selling your own products or services or buying wholesale and reselling will generally require a shopping cart program. A shopping cart is software that allows your customer to place an order and pay for the items ordered. Your website will include article pages, a contact page, a terms page, an about us page and of course product pages.

If you chose affiliate marketing as your business you do not need a shopping cart. Your website will consist mainly of article pages and product reviews. Your articles will be relevant to the subject of the website. You will place special links in the content of the article that will refer your reader to your affiliate partner's website where your reader can then purchase the product. You are then paid a commission on the sale.
