Health care
People need good, professional health care services no matter if the economy is good or bad. This is an industry that has experienced significant growth over the last few decades and there are no signs of slowing down especially now that the baby boomer's are reaching old age.
Consider businesses that focus on offering affordable preventive solutions to people (Special Diets), alternative health care (herbal remedies) and home health (care giving). There will be a good market for these services for years to come.
Food and beverages
Instead of a traditional restaurant you might consider a food and beverage business that focuses on offering healthy eating. You could link your food and beverage business to the health care industry and tap into the baby boomer market. As baby boomer's age they will be looking for ways to stay healthy and will be interested in healthy eating
Repair services
There will always be people who need repair services. Whether it is plumbing, appliance repair, car repair or any number of other services there is a market for these services. Again as the baby boomer's age the demand for these type services will grow because older people are less able to do it themselves.
Many, if not all, repair services require specialized training, skills and equipment. However, many training programs are only six months to a year and once you have the necessary skills you will be able to start a recession proof business that offers a potential for high profits.
Discount Retail
Dollar stores and thrift stores do very well during a recession. Once you get established and build up a regular clientele from the surrounding community you should do well anytime provided you have some good merchandise at a good discount.
Information Technology
Today every mid- sized or large company is highly dependent on IT to get their business done. The number of young people going into computer science has dropped tremendously in recent years. There is a shortage of quality IT personnel In the United States. At the same time there are numerous training programs offering specialized certifications for all types of IT services. Many of these programs take six months to a year to complete and their graduates are in high demand. This is one area that offers tremendous opportunity for consulting and freelance work if you are inclined to be in business for yourself or employment opportunities with good solid companies.
Even though the country is not coming out of the recession quickly there are many opportunities for those who still have the entrepreneurial spirit and are willing to work hard to capitalize on them.
