Start a Vinyl Sign Business in Your Home

A vinyl sign business is a good business to start from home, because all you need is a computer, a vinyl printer, some cutting tools, a large cutting surface and you are on your way. You will also need a sign program for your computer to design signs and graphics. If you are talented you may be able to use Microsoft Word to design some signs, but eventually you will probably need to use a graphic design computer program.

WRITE A PLAN: Every business that wants to be successful need to write a business plan first. These are not hard to write up and you can find help to write one on the internet. Simply search for "writing a business plan". If you have any questions you can seek help on websites or at your local Job and Family Services office.

EDUCATE YOURSELF: You may need to take a couple of classes for graphic design to learn a computer design program for vinyl signs. You could also try to get a job at a local sign business to learn about graphics and making vinyl signs. Search your community to find out if there is a vinyl sign company that has recently went out of business. The old owners may be happy to show you the ropes of the business, and you may even get some discount equipment to start your business with. You could also simply volunteer some of your time at a sign business, if you cannot use any of these other options.

PROMOTE AND ADVERTISE: The first and best way to advertise your new vinyl sign business is to put some of your own vinyl signs that you make on your car, home windows and anywhere else you can. Another way to advertise is to do some free vinyl signs on windows at a friend or family members place of business. Simply do their sign on the window and since it is free, ask them is you can put your business logo on the window below their business name and sign for some publicity.
