Starting Artists is a non-profit, after-school program that teaches students a combination of arts and entrepreneurship, reports Cobble Hill Blog. What an innovative idea!

Starting Artists began because its founder, Marisa Catalina Casey, did a survey. She and her fellow Columbia University grad students surveyed the needs of underprivileged students. The result was an extra-curricular arts program.

For about four years now, Starting Artists has been filling that need. Students have been doing all kinds of exciting things at the program. They visualize poetry. It's inspiring and nurtures the imagination. In a room filled with computers, students learn graphic arts and how to use the industry's coveted software: Adobe Audition programs like InDesign, Photoshop, After Effects, and Flash As Casey says, "They're going to be so far ahead of the curve, they're going to be able to get those positions at ad firms, at creative agencies, graphic design firms."

In addition, the students learn the business side of art and entrepreneurship.

Starting Artists will not be resigning the lease on its current space and it is looking for a new home. Surely, there is a good-hearted person in the Cobble Hill area who would want to donate a space to this valuable program. Think of the difference these skills will make in the students' lives and how the space would be part of that difference. Whoever makes this donation will be starting artists.

Starting Artists' Motto is: 'Get Inspired, Get Creative, Get to Work.' The students are inspired; they're creative. Now, all they need is a place to get to work.

From the skyscrapers of NYC, I face strength. From the people of NYC, I gain understanding. And from the heart of NYC, I feel inspiration. So, I tend to write about the city quite a bit.  View profile
