Starting New Christmas Traditions for Newlyweds
Five Simple Christmas Traditions that Will Create Lifelong Memories
Any good Christmas celebration starts with the decorating of the Christmas tree. Every year, pick a weekend when you are both available, and decorate together. Before decorating, go out and purchase a Christmas ornament together. This makes a nice tradition, as you can unpack your ornaments and reminisce about past celebrations every year. Pick ornaments that are meaningful to both of you. You might want to consider a theme, or an ornament series.
Once you have finished decorating, take a picture in front of your Christmas tree. You can make it as serious or silly as you want. It is fun to dress up in cheesy old Christmas sweaters, but a traditional picture is also nice. These pictures make excellent photo cards to send to your family and friends if you do not want to write a Christmas letter. Look at old pictures every year to see how things have changed in your life.
Another essential element to your Christmas is cookies and candy. Each of you should pick out one or two treats, and then make each other's selections. Cooking together gives you a chance to bond, and talk about the coming festivities. You can then share your treats with guests, or give some of them as gifts to friends or family. No matter if you are celebrating at your house or someone else's, cookies and candies will be much appreciated!
As you do your Christmas shopping, purchase gifts for each other that come in the number of years you have been married. These can be simple gifts that are fun, or go all out if you can afford it! Here are some ideas that might work for you: a one hour massage at a local spa, two tickets to a concert or sporting event, a six pack of beer, a dozen movie passes, you get the idea. Be creative and have fun with this one!
Christmas is a time for giving, and you can make it a tradition. Select a charity together, and make a donation every year. This is a good way to share your Christmas spirit with someone less fortunate than you. If you need some ideas, check out my article that discusses ten charities to which you can donate.
These are just a few tradition suggestions that can make the Christmas season even merrier! I encourage you to try them, or create your own tradition. Many years from now you will be glad that you started a tradition this year. Traditions create memories that can be shared for a lifetime!
Have a merry Christmas!
