Starting an EBay Business?

Thinking It's a Piece of Cake Will Lead You to Quick Disappointment

Joe Grobin
The greatest misconception people have about starting an eBay business is that it is easy. Many are under the false impression that they can weed stuff out of their attics or garages, post it on eBay and then rake in their earnings.

This is partially true, but mostly false. True, you may have a lot of stuff in your attic that an eBay buyer may want, but a lot of the time, you have to sort through a lot of junk, to find the products people are going to want to buy.

One of the big mistakes people make right off the bat after deciding they want to sell on eBay is to automatically assume that they will not have to put the same amount of time and effort into their business as any other brick-and-mortar or online business owner - and they couldn't be more wrong in assuming that. To succeed (and actually have a business on eBay), you have to think like a business owner (unless, of course, you are just posting products for the fun of it).

So, to start with, the question to ask yourself is why you are selling on eBay? Do you want to make a little extra money (with no real sales goals set for yourself, or do you want to make a business out of this? Regardless of whether you are the former or the latter, you will need to still follow the following steps if you want to actually sell something on this online auction site.

Now that it has been established that you want to sell on eBay, you need to decide what you are going to sell. This should be your primary concern in the beginning as it will obviously make or break your sale or your business. You need to know your product and be able to speak to it if a customer has an inquiry or when it comes down to simple things such as marketing and item descriptions.

In addition, it pays to know your product's place in the eBay market. There are some things (such as electronics) that tend to sell faster and at higher prices than other eBay auction goods. This is why it is a good idea to research the market and see what things are selling for as well as look at products similar to yours to see how much they are selling for. By doing this research, it gives you a more clear-cut scenario of things to come as well as how your sales will play out when you do go on to post something.

Another little tip some people overlook when selling on eBay is customer satisfaction. Many people forget they are running a business and that their image and how they come across to the customer is just as important as having that one special product someone will bid on.

If you neglect to answer phone call inquiries or e-mail inquiries at all or in a timely fashion, you will not get good customer feedback. This is turn harms how other potential customers perceive you when looking at your merchandise.

If you have the right product and the positive customer feedback to get your business going, then you will need to start thinking of other factors that will not only establish your business but also help it to grow. This is namely, how you spend your business's money. Are you reinvesting your eBay profits into the business, or are you spending your earnings? If you don't reinvest, you limit your potential to grow the company. Remember, it takes money to earn money!

Also, look at how you are spending your business's money for business-related purchases. Are you shipping things out in a frugal manner? Are you overspending on packaging? It pays to look into these sorts of things because if you are overspending on inconsequentials you run the risk of stemming your eBay business's growth.

The last point to consider once you do have an established business on eBay is to decide whether you need help. If you become so overwhelmed with having to ship out or answer customer inquiries, you may need to get help. Knowing when to persist on your own to keep overhead costs low, or when to finally decide to hire someone to help you, is the difference between staying small or growing and having a profitable business. It's your choice.

  • Many people assume selling on eBay is easy
  • It can be. However, it's a business like any other
  • If you want to start an eBay business, it requires a lot of pre-planning and research
