Starting a Garden That's Right for You

Dee Jones
Have you been thinking about starting a garden? If so, one of the first things you should consider is the kind of garden you will have. In many ways, gardens are like dogs. Just as certain dog breeds would be more suited to you and your family than others, you will probably enjoy taking care of one kind of garden over another. The trick is finding the type of garden that best suits you, your lifestyle, and your living situation. So here are a few things you should think about before starting your garden.

A Vegetable Garden

Do you dream of being able to pick fresh vegetables for your salads from your very own garden? If so, you've probably thought about starting a vegatable garden.

A vegetable garden can be pretty challenging. First, you have to have enough space for the "crops" you want to grow. Then you have to research to find out which vegetables will grow best in your area, which ones will grow best at which time of year, and so on. You also have to learn how to care for your garden properly to wreap the most benefits.

But as challenging as vegetable gardens can be, they can also be very rewarding. There are few things as fullfilling as eating produce you grew yourself.

A Flower Garden

Maybe you are enchanted by pictures of the beautiful gardens you see in landscape magazines, and want to have one of your own. If so, starting a garden filled with bright, beautiful flowers might be for you.

A flower garden is a little easier to take care of than a vegetable garden. Once you find the flowers that will grow best in your area, and take proper care in planting them, all that's required to keep your flower garden growing strong and beautiful is some routine maintenance.

An Herb Garden

Herb gardens are like the best of both worlds. They don't need as much care or effort as a vegetable garden. But you can still have the pleasure of eating something you grew yourself. And many find lush, green herbs to be as beautiful as any brightly colored flower. And, on top of all of that, you don't need a lot of room to keep an herb garden.

An herb garden might be perfect for you if have always dreamed of starting a garden, but your time or space is limited.

If you're thinking about starting a garden, these are just a few of your options. But whether you choose to start a vegetable garden, flower garden, herb garden, or some other type of garden, choosing the right garden for you is the best way to ensure that you will enjoy it for years to come.
