Starting a Home Based Business: The Pluses and Minuses

Should I Start My Own Home Based Business

Jessica Mele
If you have ever considered starting your own home based business, you know that there are a lot of things to take into consideration. One of the first things to consider is what type of business you want to start. Many people think about starting a home based business. Before you decide for sure, here are some plusses and minuses to starting your own home based business.

One of the biggest plusses to starting your home business for many is that you can stay at home. This will be the biggest benefit if you want to be able to take care of other family members. You will easily be able to take care of children, parents, grandparents, or siblings since you won't have to leave the house. Another big plus is that you can set your own hours. If you prefer to work in the early hours of the day, and have the rest of the day to do other things, you can. If on the other hand you are a night owl and prefer not to start your workday until it is nighttime, that is fine as well since you are working from home and it is your own business. Many people choose to have a home-based business so they can take care of their young children. This way you can work around the child's schedule, and still earn income from home.

When working for someone else, they are the boss and you have to do what you are told. When you work for yourself, you can choose what you do. This way you can make sure that you are working on things you enjoy, which will help you like your business better than just some job.

When you work at home, you can multitask. You can do work while you are getting other things done. For example, you can start the laundry, and do work while you are getting the laundry done. This also means that while you are waiting for someone to get back to you for something work related, you can get things done around the house. This ensures that you are always using your time wisely, and not sitting around waiting for someone, which sometimes happens while you are at work and you work for someone else.

Another benefit of working from home is that you can run errands during the day. If you prefer to go food shopping in the middle of the day when the stores are less crowded, you can! If you need to be around the house for a certain time frame because you are getting something delivered, it isn't a problem as you are already home.

You can even save some money working at home, as you don't have a lot of the extra expenses of commuting. You don't have to buy special work clothes, or buy lunch at work. Even better...you can work at home in your pajamas if you want! It doesn't matter what you wear, as long as you are comfortable.

There are also many negatives to working at home, and you should consider these as well when trying to decide if you want to start a work at home business. When you work for someone else, you normally get a certain set pay. When you work for yourself, you may not be sure of exactly how much money you will make each week. If you sell a product or service, you only make as much money as you can sell them for. If you don't sell anything that day, you won't make any money, even though you put a lot of time and effort into it. So there is not a steady income, since it all depends on how you do. Some weeks you can make a lot of money, and others you can make nothing. There is no guarantee.

If you work for someone else, most of the time you will get benefits. If you have your own business, you need to worry about all of that yourself. You have to get health insurance, as well as worry about putting money into your own retirement accounts. Speaking of benefits, you also don't get any sick or vacation days. So if you take time off from work, you won't make any money during that time off, as you will not get any work done.

Some people like having others around to socialize with all day. When you work in an office, you have co-workers, as well as others to talk to and to bounce ideas off of. When you work from home on your own business, usually you have very few, if any others to bounce ideas off of, or people to talk to during the day. If you are a very social person, this may be hard to do.

When you are the boss of your home-based business, you decide what to do. While this can be a plus, it can also be a minus. If you are unsure of what to do, or are just starting out, you may wish to have others that are more experienced to be able to help you instead of being on your own. When you work for yourself, you need to either know how to do what you want or know where to be able to get the information.

As you can see, there are many plusses and minuses to working from home on your own business. You have to take a look at both and see which one makes more sense for you.
