Starting a Mother-Daughter Book Club

As a mom, being a part of a book club with your daughter is a great way to learn more about her and allow her to learn more about you. As you discuss the novels you read together in your book club, in a safe environment with many different opinions and ideas, you may become closer than ever before, all thanks to reading. Try these ideas to get your own mother daughter book club started.

Invite Members. The first step to creating a mother daughter book club is to invite some worthy members. The important part here is making sure that the daughters in the book club are all relatively the same age so that age appropriate books can be chosen for reading. Try to get girls from different schools if possible so that as many different perspectives as possible can be shared. Try looking on sports leagues, at church, or among coworkers to find members for your mother daughter book club.

Choose Books. Depending on the ages of the daughters in your book club, you may want to preview books for content before you choose them as book club selections. If the daughters are middle school aged or older, however, the books will best be enjoyed and discussed by both the mothers and the daughters if they are read by all for the very first time. Check with your local library's YA librarian, your daughter's school librarian, or various online blogs to get ideas for great reads that are perfect for a mother daughter book club.

Establish Meetings. A successful mother daughter book club needs to meet regularly but kids are very busy, so monthly meetings (rather than weekly meetings) usually work best. Pick a slower time such as Friday night or Sunday afternoon to meet and try to stick to it. Also, make sure to try other outings such as going to see movie versions of the books you read as an occasional part of the club.

Make the Time Special. A final tip for starting a great mother daughter book club is to make the time really special for the daughters involved. Make special snacks, offer fancy punch or tea, and consider purchasing cute journals for each member to make notes about the books in. Making the book club meetings extra special will ensure that your daughters look forward to the meetings each and every month.

Starting a mother daughter book club is a great way to spend special time with your daughter and also other mothers and daughters of the same age, while promoting all-important reading.
