Starting an Online Store Using OsCommerce

Starting an online business is not as hard as it used to be. Setting up a website is very inexpensive, and finding products is not difficult at all. Anybody can start up an online store, but to make it successful takes patience, determination, and good marketing. However, things can get complicated if you are starting off with no knowledge at all, and it is even harder if you do not have any start up money. With the information presented in this article, even without any cash, you will hopefully know enough to start an osCommerce store.

What is osCommerce? It is one of the most popular e-commerce systems available, and it is 100% free. In fact, it is Open Source, and individuals around the world consistently write Contributions, which are helpful additions to the main structure. While you have everything you need right out of the box with osCommerce, Contributions make osCommerce very powerful. But as stated, you do not need to use Contributions with osCommerce, they are just additions. With osCommerce you get a functional shopping cart system, user accounts, advanced admin panel, and of course the ability to add categories, products, content, and more. Once you have uploaded products into the system, you are ready to start selling!

First and foremost, you must get a domain and hosting. Now this is where you will have an advantage over other people who just take any domain they can get. Choose a domain that describes your business, so when search engines analyze your site, they will place you higher up in the search results for that keyphrase (although SEO is a whole other topic). There are a variety of affordable hosts out there, including GoDaddy, HostGator, and BlueHost. Once you have your domain and are hosting it, you can upload osCommerce through cPanel or FTP, and from then on control your site through the osCommerce administration panel.

So far, the only things that cost money are the domain and hosting, and if you do not know anything about programming, it is wise to pay someone to set up osCommerce for you. While osCommerce is the most popular of shopping cart applications, there are a lot of bugs in it (which are fixed with Contributions) and many things you probably want altered. You can find someone cheap online to set up osCommerce for you and install whatever Contributions you want (or whatever they feel is good for you). This investment will help you immensely for the immediate setup of the site and the future. Also, make sure to keep in contact with whomever you hire in case you need future help.

The next thing you need to do is get products for your store. The best thing to do is find a reliable drop shipper (you should have a drop shipper found before you even register a domain). The great thing about drop shipping is you sell, they ship; you do not need to stock or ship products yourself, you simply sell them for the drop shipper and they ship them to the buyer. When somebody buys a product, you send money to the drop shipper and a message with where and who to send the product (you keep whatever markup you put on the item). There! A transaction has just been successfully completed. Easy, huh? It takes hard work to get sales, or more importantly, make a substantial income off them, but if you stick with it and market effectively, you are sure to succeed.
