Starting Your Own Consulting Business

Starting a Consulting Business is Easy for Those Who Have the Experience

Bill Johnson
It is difficult to say when people will be in need of starting their own consulting business; it is so because there are various ways of approaching it. The best thing about it is it could be started as a part time business and could be done out of a home, a garage etc. For the most part what is for sale is expertise that the entrepreneur has under the belt, which has no requirement for storage, or there is no pick up and delivery, no display or demonstration, and the like that are known factors to hike the cost of starting a small business.

However, the requirements are much stricter when contemplating to start a consulting business and it is important that whoever wants to look that way makes sure what is required is there. Education is an essential factor but not the only catalyst here, and if there is one single winning formula it is experience. The recommendation is that the consultant has hands on experience of several years at least in the chosen field of the expertise so that it is possible to render a very effective and knowledgeable service.

Consulting is not one of those fields where on the job training should be contemplated, because if what is required is not there it is possible to lose customers, and in today's world where news travel fast it is possible that the reputation of the venture could suffer unsustainable damage. Nevertheless, in today's world, where the uncertainty of the work place is always on the rise because of layoffs, downsizing, outsourcing, diversification, or outright going under of businesses, people are looking for other means of earning a living. The other groups those who want to stay home because of family related reasons, or those who want to avoid the workplace hassle, not to mention the rush hour traffic, one good sector to retreat to with whatever expertise and experience are under the belt is into the field of consulting, because there is demand for it. Businesses are forking out billions of dollars on a yearly basis for consulting related works.

But first there are few questions that a would be consultant should ask and one of them is if some kind of certification or a license is required to do a given kind of consulting job. Because most consulting fields require to have a special license and to obtain those licenses there might be other requirement where certain kind of educational level or experience could be required. Alternatively, some licenses require the taking of a given course so that the consultant is knowledgeable in the field. It is not only that anyone who wants to become a consultant in any field should first consider if there is enough basic qualification to do the job.

Once that is in place there are a few quasi issues that have to be addressed especially if the would be consultant is going to go into the business directly from a 9:00 to 5:00 work arrangement, because once the entrepreneurial route is chosen, there is the time management issue. Planning one's day is a highly contributing factor to the success of the business. Hence, to know that time management is a key issue is paramount here.

Also having a business plan from the beginning helps the business to stay its course when the going gets tough, which could happen when the business volume picks up, or when the business falters. The plan should outline what measures to take if the business did not perform as it was expected. Considering how much to charge for the service in advance is also important. It has to be according to what the other similar businesses are charging, because being unnecessarily expensive or cheap could backfire; as the former could drive business away, while the latter will make it difficult for new prospects to take the business seriously. Doing a little bit of a research on how much competitors are charging could go a long way.

Then there are legal issues that should be considered and consulting business is not different form any other business, because there are tax related issues that require advanced preparation where the business might have to be registered, and it has to be in one of the three known forms. A sole proprietorship, partnership, or corporation and most of all, incorporating the business so that any liability incurred in the process of doing the business will not become a personal liability will save the day when problem arises. If the business has a name registering it is required, because without having it registered it is difficult to use the name, for example, if the business wants to open a bank account using the name. Also registering the name will guarantee someone else will not use it. Moreover, it is not possible to go into contractual agreement using unregistered name, because if something goes wrong, the name will have no legitimacy in the court of law unless it is registered.

Sales tax number might be a requirement for some services and to find out it is advisable to contact the comptroller office of the state one is residing in. For the most part, unless a sole proprietorship business hires employees there is no need to obtain Employee Identification Card and it is possible to use the Social Security Card for tax purposes.

After taking care of the legality aspect of the business the process of looking for customers will set in, and that process is not different from any other marketing campaign. First touching on the reasons what kind of needs are out there that necessitates the hiring of consultants might enable a consulting business how to target its marketing strategy. According to reports dealing with these particular issues, there are essential points discussed as to why today's organizations will hire consultants. The first main reason is straight and to the point. A business wants to hire a consultant solely because of the expertise of the consultant and the track record the consultant could furnish, because experience in the particular field adds to the importance of the consultant, where the more experience one has the more opportunities there are out there.

Bringing in a consultant is like bringing in an expert to identify problems in a given business in order to avail a solution. Or at times a business might find it necessary to supplement the existing staff and hiring a contractual consultant will save a lot of expense, because once the agreed up on fee is paid, there are no extra coverages. Most companies hire consultants to train workers on the job and having a number of advantages from the process is possible. One of them being there will not be a need to bring in new employees and there will not be a need to fire existing employees because they could be trained to do different things, which is very good for the employee and employer relationship. This is without mentioning the technical advantage and return on investment (ROI) that could be gained from investing and introducing new technology or new ways of doing things.

There are times consultants are hired to do jobs that require making tough decisions like layoff, or selling part of a business, diversification, introduction of using new ways of doing business, outsourcing, new acquisition, etc and for each requirement the consultant might have a special expertise. It is not only that a consultant could come in to resuscitate a dying business as a last resort or to change the direction of the business, and obviously the opportunity and the requirements are unlimited. Also hiring a topnotch consultant to work as a lobbyist on behalf of the business to go out and meet new prospects or existing customers to improve the image of the business is possible. What is required on the part of the consultant is to capitalize heavily on the particular niche that is under the belt. To do that a topnotch marketing campaign is required.

When it comes to marketing there is no a magic formula that works only for the consulting business and applying all the known marketing methods is required to bring in customers. The best place to start is with a business card that states exactly what the business is doing, including contact address. While there having brochures printed is also key, because brochures are essential to tell customers what the business is doing, and can be distributed all over town using the available distributing methods of each locality, but their effectiveness is undisputed.

Cold calling might seem to be off limit when it comes to a consulting business but it is not so, and it is helpful to make cold calling as much as possible to talk to would be prospects and the methods of choosing who to speak to depends on the field the business is specializing in. Having an advertising budget might go a long way because putting ads on various publications will definitely attract prospects like it does for many other businesses, but what to take into consideration is not to overshoot beyond a certain budget. Some recommend having a newsletter could start an ongoing dialogue with would be prospects and except it is time consuming, if managing it is possible it is one good way of drumming up business. Networking is also one known way of bringing what a business is doing to the attention of many people and it is possible to garner engagements like public speaking through it.

The new medium, the Internet has become a very useful tool for advertising. All it takes is to start a Web site and advertise the Web site through the available methods, that include Pay-Per-Click advertising where advertising what a business is doing is possible through search engines that charge by how many people clicked through the ad they display on their site and many others.

There is email marketing that could drive a huge traffic to a Web site, which could become qualified prospects as long as the site has a good copy telling them what is up for grabs. Distributing the newsletter electronically over the Internet could also be more effective. It is also possible to hire affiliates through the Web site that will be paid commission according to the business they bring in. Another possibility is to put text and banner ads on sites that are willing to carry the ads and that will be in addition to what the search engines will do through their PPC ad. All in all, as long as the other part of the package is in place, the affordable advertising venues to reach customers are out there. All it takes is tapping into them according to one's budget, and for example, doing business on the Internet with a shoestring budget had been possible.

  • Education alone might not be enough in consulting, it requiers a few years of experience
  • Starting a consulting business is not different than starting any other business
  • Consulting business could be done from home as a part time business, which makes it ideal
There is a lot money to be made in consulting business because businesses are spending into the billions to get some of the savings advantages and of course, the expertise could also go a long way, and for the most part it might not be availavle in-house.

I'm sorry, I'm not usually one to complain but there are a ton of lexical errors and grammatical errors in this article. Catalyst is used incorrectly, you have a sentence that reads, "the other groups those who..." which could be fixed with a comma if it didn't continue into "...one-hour traffic, one good sector..."
I am interested in what you have to say, but you have to learn to write properly.
