Starvation for Sanjaya - Possibly the Dumbest Hunger Strike Ever
American Idol Fan Starves Herself Over Sanjaya's Success
"J," as she refers to herself on her website, is writing a blog about her hunger strike. Apparently, it has created quite the stir. The Myspace page has almost 2,000 friends! Strangely enough, many "friends" of this cause have left comments such as "I'll be having a nice steak tonight while I vote for Sanjaya."
Personally, I am not a fan of Sanjaya Malakar. I could not handle the numerous shots of a crying pre-teen girl at last week's Idol show. I mean, at first it was amusing, but then it was just lame. Part of me wants to think that they kept showing her because nobody else in the audience looked like they were enjoying Sanjaya's performance. How could they be?
But to decide not to eat because he is still on the show... that is just plain stupid. For starters, Sanjaya has an unfortunate appeal to a large demographic of the American Idol audience- teenage girls. I believe that Sanjaya might just be to 2007 what Taylor Hanson was to 1997. No one of any merit really believed that Taylor, Zach, or Isaac Hanson were talented singers, but the Hanson brothers sold millions of records because teenage girls thought they were cute. Sanjaya seems to have that appeal, and it will likely carry him far.
Sanjaya is also one of the few teenagers on the show this season. Previous seasons have had more teenagers as finalists, but this time through there is only Sanjaya for the boys and Jordin Sparks for the girls. Teenagers like to vote for teenagers. I think they feel some cosmic connection to them, solely because of their age.
To make matters worse, some Idol hecklers are even voting for Sanjaya, just to spite the show. In an effort to keep up the entertainment of those bad auditions, VoteForTheWorst.com is encouraging everyone to call in and vote for Sanjaya. In past seasons of American Idol, VoteForTheWorst has been fairly successful at keeping some of the worst singers on longer than the best singers. Up against such a formidable foe, J has no hope of seeing her hunger strike end soon.
Apparently, J is aware of what VoteForTheWorst.com is doing. VoteForTheWorst has actually published a letter from her on their website. In the letter she says:
"Y'all are a bunch of junkies! Who destroys people's singing careers over a dang joke? If you were in Brandin, LaKisha, Melinda, Stephanie, Chris, and other's shoes, would you want a joke to destroy your singing repetation, if not stop voting for the Sanjaya. If yes, go to the devil."
Knowing that she has VoteForTheWorst against her, as well as all of the teenage girls who are in love with his boyish good looks, continuing in her hunger strike just demonstrates her lack of wisdom. According to the video on her blog, her purpose for the hunger strike is essentially to stand up for the talented singers on the show, because "some people" [i.e. VoteForTheWorst] are sabotaging the show by voting for Sanjaya. It is sad that she doesn't realize they do not need her to stand up for them; they have pretty much launched their career just by getting this far on the show. Some of the most successful singers from previous seasons of American Idol were the ones who did not win. Jennifer Hudson is an award-winning actress, and Chris Daughtry has a best-selling album. Neither of these former idols made it to even the top two.
Radio show hosts "Kevin and Bean" found the "Starvation for Sanjaya" so ridiculously dumb that they encouraged listeners to vote for Sanjaya and let her die. At this point, J has been on hunger strike for 10 days. The body starts to harvest muscle and vital organs after approximately three weeks of starvation. Hopefully, she will not continue this charade much longer.

Post a CommentHanson are great musicians now... Their music is great!
This comment is so unfair! Hanson improved their sound comparing it to 1997 times!
"No one of any merit really believed that [Hanson] were talented singers..." ? If I recall, "Middle of Nowhere" received raves from critics (not just teenage girls). Their harmonies, particularly nowadays, are unbelievably beautiful. Someone should send you Hanson's a capella cover of "Change in My Life" -- it will blow you away. So full of soul and passion. It's unfortunate that Hanson's talent gets derided simply because they were shoved into the spotlight by a mass marketing machine. They sold millions of records partly because of their youthful appeal and appearance, yes, but they're still going strong on their own because of their musical prowess and drive.
And as far as Sanjaya goes... it's a TV show. Period. Not the end of the world. This is only a big deal because people on both sides of the debate are making it a big deal.
And besides, he looks like he's having fun, so more power to him.
If you have ever heard Hanson NOW they DO sound great.
better than before. MUCH better than before.
and they ARE a very talented band.
#1 on the independent Billboard
needless to say, this journalist has opened quite the can of worms. Maybe check the facts before making a whole lot of people mad...
Oh gosh, I also hate Sanjaya. What a fluke. The hair is just unacceptable. I'm also sorry that you compared him to Hanson, since it was bound to bring out the angry Hanson fans. Yet, as someone who does listen to Hanson, I have to say that they are very, very different from when they first came out and are actually quite critically acclaimed in music circles. Thus, to say that they aren't talented just isn't true.
I agree with you Jane, i don't find sanjaya attactive either. I also agree with you Charlotte, the comment you made was very true, lets face it Hanson have become even better since 1997. There are people out there who like bands because they are talented its not all about the looks.
Maybe you should read up a little before you make uneducated assertions towards one of the highest selling independent artists making music now. i'd like to know what you think 11, 14, and 16 year olds should be accomplishing if not performing over 900 live shows, writing and playing their own music, and keeping a very huge fan baase for the next TEN years. And i don't find that sanjaya kid even remotley attractive.
The hunger strike really is a stupid idea, and its not Sanjaya fault hes still in the show. The comment about Hanson was unfair, they are great singers and they have improved even more since 1997 ( 10 years ago you stupid jackass ) even Hanson themselves will say the same. This person seems to forget that they were teenagers, lets face it what male teenager sounds great with their voices breaking? Also i have seen Hanson live and they can sing..
you analogy is lame. Hanson is a VERY talented band and they are doing alot for indie music everywhere. if you had done your homework, listen to their more current music, seen their documentary, you would know that they are grown men now and very passionate about their art.
Wow...lol... who knew there were so many Hanson fans. Okay, so maybe that analogy was a bit hasty. Honestly, I have a Hanson album, I've listened to it several times, but they're not power ballads, that's for sure...lol. Anyhow, my analogy accomplished one thing- it got attention. :-)
