Governor Walker is a Republican. The Wisconsin legislature has a Republican majority in both houses. If one knows anything of the typical and ancient left/right struggle they know that Wisconsin is perhaps the most leftist driven state in the nation, yet a Republican governor and both houses of their legislature controlled by non-leftists seems odd on its face, no? Wisconsin is heavy with union members in shipping and industrial manufacturing. The University of Wisconsin is an institution steeped in left headed thought and one of the most liberal campuses in the nation.
The major issue of contention is the Governor and legislature having the clout and intention of culling union power and not merely for the sake of bringing union thuggery down a notch but to save the state some serious cash as they face a $3.6 Billion dollar shortfall. Teachers are members of the "public unions" as they are often called. Do readers know that with benefits Wisconsin teachers make almost $100K per year? Yep, now that's a chunk of change for sure!
The governor is asking the public unions to begin to contribute to their own retirement and health care costs which the unions are now screaming bloody murder over. This measure is being taken to try and relieve some of the budgetary mess Wisconsin is in and especially because of the public unions. That is the brief history.
Now consider all the chatter from national Democrats about "Republican's want to shut down the government because they hate poor people" or whatever ignorance is rolling off their lips today. Yet those same Democrats, I mean HYPOCRITES, are all for the paid Democrat legislators in Wisconsin to disappear so the legislature cannot reach the quorum needed to cast a vote. And national Democrats are all for the Wisconsin Democrats making like the wind and disappearing, resulting in a complete shutdown of the legislature.
So Democrats are okay with shutting down government if it suits their ends? But aren't they flapping their gums that evil Republicans in DC will possibly shut down government over the budget battles? Gee, why do they advocate for Wisconsin libs shutting down government but rail against Republicans in DC for the mere threat of not caving in to Democrat budgetary demands? Lying HYPOCRITES!
Folks this is why we have heard so much from Republicans after the November midterms about so many state legislatures swinging to Republican control. The nation manifest a major change with their votes to turn their state houses to Republican control for the obvious reasons...in times of fiscal danger and when tough choices must be made the public knows Democrats have too much invested in the politics of race and identity to be trusted to slash budgets to sound and sustainable levels.
National Republicans paid a great deal of attention to this phenomenon and now the casual political observer can see what it was all about. There will be more of what we see in Wisconsin before the 2012 election rolls around - much, much more.
Lastly as I mentioned, one may lament the possible government shut downs looming if they wish but they need to remember who is it in Wisconsin who is purposely hiding in a neighboring state to avoid being dragged back - BY LAW - to vote on the Wisconsin governor's union proposals. In effect Democrats are shutting down government to avoid having a quorum they know they will lose and lose big time. Yet national Democrats go on and on about them evil Republicans who will not cave to Democrat budgetary wishes as we question the maturity of Democrats in accepting the inevitable. Citizens voted for smaller and cheaper government and Democrats best get the Hell over it. If they though 2010 was ugly, keep it up Dems...they ain't seen nothing yet!

Post a CommentLeft states turning Right also include New Jersey, not to mention the states already Right that we know. The tide is turning. And austerity isn't the answer, as some of your "scarcity" commenters suggest. Progress is the answer, as always. Let those who want to go back to Stone Age methods. For me and you, Whippy, we'd like to advance, not go backwards.
Usually if you don't show up for work for more than a couple of days you lose your job. Interesting that they ran to the people's republic of Illinois.
Guess what, Indiana is in the black! Thanks to Mitch the knife.
PV Love with Hugs & Kisses!!!
we also had our governor her in Florida stop the rail system because he believes it will eventually force our state and its tax payers to spend money we don't have. Of course, we have tons of Democratic people up in arms about the decision. It's amazing how some of the conservatives we voted in are actually stopping the spending and the progressives want to continue to spend us into a deficit we can never overcome. There is still work, there are still many progressive Liberals (including some Repubs) we need to vote out and replace them with patriots who actually want to do the right thing for their country
David, ya lose me Bro when ya get to the "top down" noise. YES, both parties spent like profligate whores, but what does that have to do with my points? I said current lefties are stalling and shuttering gubment. Am I mistaken? Didn't the vast majority of State houses switch to Republican? They did Sir. And there will be much more as Democrats attempt to play racial, class and identity politics to try and save their constituencies as solid Dem voting blocks. You know this David - you're a damned smart man, so don't go all progressive sycophant on me Pal. Differ though we may reason and ration are your usual points. What I said stands...Dems will suffer for their hypocrisy and identity politics. Watch and see.
I wonder how many of those protesters in WI had their signs made at union printing shops.
I expect that recent events in Wisconsin are note the 'beginning' of anything. Rather, they are one of many growing bursts resulting from BOTH political parties spending our country into the red for over a century. The economy is not collapsing. It HAS collapsed under its own weight. From the top down - the Federal, State, County and local governments are broke or nearly so. Change would need to envision a different approach. Austerity as a solution, over time, will most certainly lead to ultimate revolution and a different type of society that that which our blessed Capitalism has brought us in the long run.
