Staten Island, NY Restaurant Review: Adobe Blues

I spend most of my time off Staten Island and only went to Adobe Blues a couple of times because I heard such good things about this place. I have to say it has some of the best food I have had in the past year or so and, as I am sure you might have intuited from the number of restaurant reviews here, I eat out a lot. Located near the historic Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Botanical Garden (which is a great nearby place, by the way, to walk off your meal), Adobe Blues features great Tex-Mex cuisine. The Cream of Chicken and Green Chili soup is thick, creamy, and delicious. The ribs are great, the enchiladas are great, the chimichangas are great, the burritos are great, everything on the menu is thick and just greasy enough and gooey and great. Try the buffalo sausage appetizer and the Drunken Mexican Shrimp, which is one of my favorites, and finish it with the fried ice cream. The portions are huge, and you could easily eat yourself sick. And you will. The prices are cheap enough, with the entrees ranging between $12 and $20 dollars each, that if you have a bit of liquor in you, you will be strongly tempted to order too much, just to taste everything. There is also a full bar, with dozens of beers. The rustic décor, complete with a working fireplace gives the place an added charm. And there is live music nights, but it can get very crowded very quickly.

I have heard complaints about the service, and read a few more complaints online. I probably avoided a bad experience with the service: I once showed up one Saturday afternoon and there was only one waitress on duty; luckily, she was excellent and handled about a dozen tables with nary a slip. Still, if you are going for the food, grab lunch rather than dinner where you will skip the crowd and diminish the possibility of bad service.

Adobe Blues is relatively close to the ferry. Located at 63 Lafayette Avenue, near the corner of Fillmore, you can get there by taking a short ride on the S44 bus from the ferry terminal to Fillmore Avenue. It is open from Monday to Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 11pm, Fridays and Saturdays from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. and Sundays from noon to 11:00 p.m.
