Station Ten

A Christmas Tale

Kyle Godwin
A regular customer at the store where I clerk is a fireman. During the holiday season, I wrote a set of Christmas cards to those whom I hold in the highest regard. What follows below then, was written for the men and women of Fire Station Ten. Since the Christmas bulletin board had to come down and make way for the New Year, I knew that such high regard should not be boxed up and forgotten or lost.

"Station Ten"
Another Year gone 'round again,
For all of those at Station Ten.
Where probies with sad faces stricken,
Wash dinner plates once heaped with chicken.

And all were gathered to remember,
A special day in late December.
Just as the Christmas Tale begins,
A crashing, clanging, noisy din!

There! Interrupting! It's the Mission Bell!
"Station Ten to Fight the Fires of Hell!"
At the scene from the windows, the fire's leapt out
with people all over, running about.

And there, from the roadside, a shout hard to bear!
A mom, tightly held, yelling "My daughter's in there!"
And on the back of your neck, stands up all the hair!
"Away Station Ten! A rescue's in there!"

And there, in the midst of the fire's deadly light,
Station Ten earns its own Christmas story this night.
The daughter when by the fireman found,
was safe, and unharmed, with an angel right 'round.

To the fireman, the angel did say with a shout:
"She is safe, I was with her, Now take her, Get out!"
And back at the station this story is told,
each Christmastime, to never get old.

Not many remember
Exactly how long it's been,
Since discovered the Angel,
That Guards Station Ten.
