Stauffer's Original Animal Crackers: A Product Review

For the Kid in All of Us

Tina Twito
"Animal crackers in my soup. Monkeys and rabbits loop the loop. Gosh oh gee but I have fun.
Swallowing animals one by one!"

For many of us animal crackers were a part of our childhood, whether in the little red box or out of a bag. Some animal crackers are more like cookies or graham crackers, but "Stauffer's Original Animal Crackers" are the kind you really could float in a bowl of soup. (Though I have yet to meet anyone who has actually eaten animal crackers in their soup. Maybe for the next review!)

"Stauffer's Original Animal Crackers" come in a red and blue bag that is reminiscent of a circus tent. It is festooned with red, yellow, and blue balloons. On the front a cartoon lion is enjoying a camel cracker, and a monkey is holding a green balloon that tells us that "Stauffer's Original Animal Crackers" are low fat.The bag makes the cookies that show through the clear portion of the bag look even more fun.

I picked up a bag of "Stauffer's Original Animal Crackers" for the closing carnival of our summer reading program. It didn't take even a quarter of the fourteen ounce bag to fill the "guess how many" bottle. I rolled up the bag and put them in a drawer and promptly forgot about them. This was in mid-July.

In late September I opened the drawer and rediscovered the forgotten bag. I was ready to toss them to the birds, as I assumed the crackers would be stale and soggy. But I tasted one and they were still crunchy and delicious! One would assume from this that "Stauffer's Original Animal Crackers" were full of preservatives, but on reading the ingredient list I didn't find anything but fairly basic ingredients.

That mystery of longevity aside, "Stauffer's Original Animal Crackers" are very good. They are lightly sweet and crispy with a texture more like a cracker than many animal crackers. And they come in lots of fun shapes that are actually discernable: camels, bison, rhinos, elephants, zebras (or horses) among others.

And for a sweet treat, "Stauffer's Original Animal Crackers" pack in a decent bit of nutrition. Each 16 cracker serving has a little dose of iron, thiamine, riboflavin, niacin and folate. There are 120 calories per serving, but only three percent of your fat (and none of that is saturated.)

So if you have kids, or just want to indulge the little kid in you, I highly recommend "Stauffer's Original Animal Crackers". They may have a great shelf life, but they aren't likely to last long enough for you to find out!

Enjoy!

"Animal Crackers and Cocoa to drink, that is the finest of suppers, I think..." one of my favorite poems from childhood! I love animal crackers even today!
