Stay Active in Cold Weather

AKA Sometimes the Most Difficult Thing Ever

Lauren Stewart
Those days are quickly approaching...the ones that make your toes curl and your eyelashes freeze. The kind of weather that makes you want to snuggle with your snuggle buddy under a blanket with a cup of hot cocoa. Your daily exercise routine comes to mind and you want to skip it, just for today. Don't do it! The more you skimp out, the more working out will fall by the wayside. Here are some tips for those cold winter days:

1. Adapt your outdoor work out session to an indoor work out session. This is easy, even for those who can't afford to go to a gym. First of all, check out gyms in your area to see which ones offer the best deal. I've seen many these days that offer promotions for $1 or even free for one month, no strings attached. Simply work out for your free month, then scour the area for another cheap or free month at a different gym. This way, you're not only saving money, but you can find out which gym suits you best when you can afford the entire membership. Also, check out a local college or university to see how much it is there. It is often free for students or discounted and probably cheaper for anyone else than a big time gym.

2. Another way to work out inside is to check out classes at your local pilates, yoga, or YMCA. You can start up one of these popular ways to exercise (yoga is my favorite!) and try new classes. You can try aerobics, dance, or an intermural sport. It is up to you, so grab a friend and see what your city has to offer.

3. Yes, you can watch TV and have a work out at the same time. Make commerical breaks the perfect opportunity to do some sit-ups, push-ups, or whatever it is you like doing. Or invest in a Wii, which makes it easy and fun to work out. They have a game called Wii Sports, which is definitely a fun workout, or Wii Fit, which incorporates different ways to work out in one game. The Wii is great for anyone looking to sneak in working out in a fun game-like package.

So, I know it is easy to become a couch potato during those cold winter months, but try these tips and you'll be keeping active and healthy and enjoying yourself all at the same time. Oh, and you'll be keeping plenty warm!
