Stay Connected to Your Teens in the Technological Age

In the past several decades, the advances in in technology have been increasing at a great pace, and today's teens and children, are more addicted to and concerned with cell phones, and computers, etc. Infact, they are more attached to the gadgets and technology around them than any other generation before. This is the main reason why parents, that are connected to the older generations and less tech savvy, find it difficult to stay connected to their children, and advance with them. Most parents are totally unaware of the fact that they are missing out on a lot of communication with their children because they are not connected to them technological wise. However, there are some parents out there who are trying to find out ways to connect to their children, and increase and enhance the communication with them.

1. Today, more and more people have come to depend on computers, regardless of how old they are, for a wide number of reasons. It has become very common to see most professors requiring homework that is based almost entirely on computer usage. While most people argue that the current computer age is responsible for a generation that has butchered English, ruined spellings, etc, they must not forget, that our future is now entirely based on technological advances, and this requires a great deal of knowledge about computers. Professors are trying their level best to prepare the teen generation for the future. You must remember, that with you as a parent, you are responsible too for gaining as much knowledge about computers, as you can. Even if you are computer-illiterate, you can learn the basic how-to's of operating a computer and maneuver the mouse, just by reading a few books, or possibly attending a few classes. Soon, you'll get the hang of it, and you'll understand more of the terms used by your children, instead of having them explaining everything to you.

Once you learn the basics of computing, you'll not only find it easier to communicate with your teen, but you'll also increase your knowledge and expertise in the use of tools, such as instant messaging, and email. Not only will this allow you to communicate with others, but also increase your communication with your teens along the lines that previously did not exist. While conversing on the phone is still one of the hot trends for teens, most teens spend hours on the computer, rather than the phone, and this undoubtedly means, that they can express themselves better in written form, than verbal communication. Once you get the hang of conversing to them via writing, they will be able to express themselves much more honestly, and in an open way.

2. There was a time, when pocket phones were the size of a house. However, cell phones are much more than just 'talking tools' now. They have most of the functionalities of a computer within them. If you cannot afford a separate computer for each member, consider purchasing cellphones. They definitely cost less, and are a great way to communicate with your teens. You can always use the handy text messaging to find out where they are and keep track of them. Even if you do not understand how to operate a cellphone, don't panic. Just reading the instructions manual can always help you to grasp the basic concepts and functions. Try to understand more about cellphones, because that will help you to stay connected with your teens no matter where they or you are.

Seeing the pace at which technology is advancing today, chances of computer or cellphone use declining in the future are scarce. Therefore, if you can't resist the changes, adopt them, and change yourself. You must realize the fact, that your teens and children live in an entirely different age, where communication facilities have increased drastically. Learning, and adopting yourself to this age, will be an advantage for you. This will, effectively, contribute to establishing a solid communication between you and your teen.
