Stay Fit After 60 with These Tips

Ambriel Maji
Let's face it life is not about slowing down anymore. It's about staying active, staying fit, and eating healthy and living long productive lives. We have all seen the 70 and up aged people who look wonderful and seem to have an over abundance of spirit and stamina. You may think to yourself I wonder how they do it, or I hope when I am that age. The thing is, it's not a secret, it's a way of life and a way of thinking that can ensure a spunky like in your senior years.

Exercise: Almost everyone mumbles and groans when it comes to exercising but the thing is when we keep our bodies active not only are we promoting good physical health, muscle tone and stamina we are also increasing blood circulation, building bone density and promoting better health all around for our bodies.

Tips on Exercising:

• Walking: one of the best forms of exercise is walking. You are getting the heart pumping and circulating all the blood in the system. Not only that you're promoting bone and muscle strengthening. You don't have to overdo it either; simply taking a small walk is better than nothing.

• Sitting Exercises: While sitting in a chair you can do all sorts of arm and leg exercises. Lifting your legs and holding them briefly before putting them back down to the ground. Lifting your arms above your head or out in front of you and then putting them down to your side again are all forms of exercise.

• Joining a Gym: This is probably one of the best things you can do for your health. Not only will it improve your health, keep you active and promote new friendships but you would be able to get personal one on one with a personal trainer who could design a simple workout geared to exactly what you need.

Healthy Eating: Most people think when they eat healthy they must forgo everything they love. The truth is you need to eat in moderation. Yes you still need to watch the carbohydrates, sugars, and fats you consume but they are still items that are needed by your body. It's also healthier to eat 5 to 6 small meals a day instead of 3 larger meals.

Tips for Healthier Eating:

• Eat Regular Meals: Skipping meals or not setting a schedule for eating is actually hurting you. When your meals are all over the place you tend to snack more, eat unhealthy and not get enough nutrients that are needed by the body.

• Eating Correct Portions: Let's face it the body needs 20 minutes to realize its full once you have finished eating a plate of food. Prior to getting seconds sit around and wait a little, share a conversation, watch a little TV, do something to occupy your time and see if you are truly still hungry.

• Moderation Eating: As stated above you don't need to cut out all the foods you love you just need to learn to eat them in moderation. Instead of eating that entire candy bar could you settle for half or even a quarter of the candy bar? This helps cut back the fats and sugars while still providing you a treat with a food you love.

• Make Gradual Changes: If you go into dieting like a raging bull chances are the bull is going to grow tired and drop the diet quickly. Make changes gradually and eventually you will notice that your entire day is filled with nutritious eating styles.

Depression: Avoid it at all cost! I know easier said than done but the thing is stresses are triggers for making us feel and look older then we are. We have all heard the old warnings that stress causes wrinkles and grey hairs, is there any true ground to this? Do you want to find out is more likely the question.

Tips for Dealing with Depression:

• Communication: Talk with people when you are feeling depressed. Share your feelings with others sometimes hearing a perspective from someone else puts things into a different perspective for you.

• Think Positive: By pushing yourself to look at the positive side of things you start to gradually pull away from the negative sides of the situation.

• Busy the Mind: Start a new hobby, read a book, clean the house, do anything to take your mind off the depression at hand.

Disclaimer: Before starting any dieting or exercise program it is best to check with your medical care provider to ensure your body can withstand the changes you are trying to make. Your medical care provider can also provide you with tips that are better geared to your own personal needs.
