Get plenty of rest. With all of the rushing around during the holiday season, it is very easy to forget how important it is to get your proper rest. It is important to get at least 7 hours of sleep each night. Studies have shown that people who do not get enough rest are at risk of gaining weight, developing Type II Diabetes as well as other illnesses.
Remember to eat healthy. It is very easy during the holidays to forget to eat healthy. It seems like everywhere you turn there are plates of homemade cookies and candy. There are parties and special dinners that give you ample opportunity to overindulge in some very unhealthy eating. Take the time to remember to eat some from the veggie tray at parties. Being mindful of what you put into your body is half the battle.
Avoid overindulging. Whether it be holiday goodies or alcohol, remember to partake of both in moderation. Overindulging makes you feel horrible. Consuming too much alcohol can put you in danger, for when you are not in control, you are more likely to become involved in reckless behaviors that you will later regret.
Take time for yourself. The holidays are about giving, but in the process of giving, we very often forget to give to ourselves. The best gift you can give to yourself is the gift of time. Take time to pamper yourself. Read a book. Take a walk or a bubble bath. It's okay to tell people "no". You don't have to attend every party. You don't have to spend every spare moment at the mall shopping with your friends. It's perfectly okay to just sit back and relax.
Limit expenses. It is very easy at the holidays to forget to be mindful of money spent. As a result, we max out our credit cards or spend money for gifts rather than bills. The joy of watching our loved ones open those gifts is lost around the first of the year when the bills start rolling in. Very often we fall into depression because we have overextended ourselves. Try and remember that people are not concerned with the price of the gift, but with the thought. Stay within your budget.
Most of the tips for staying healthy during the holidays have to do with simply being mindful of what we do. By following these tips, you will feel better and maintain your health during the holidays.
