My children recently had spring break. Most parents hate the thought of their children being out of school for a week or more at a time. My child was out for three weeks and I loved it. The realization hit me, I need to do more than just being mom. When people ask who your friends are the first person that pops into your head should not be your child.
Stay at home parents have a big responsibility. Their workload is more than just 40 hours a week. They also do not get the privilege of going to work and coming home to relax. Stay at home parents usually do not have the time or the energy for much of anything else. Exercise is a great way to boost your energy. If you choose to work out at a gym, you will also have the benefit of socialization.
Exercising is a great way to relieve stress and feel more energized. Taking a walk around the block will get you out of your house and give you a break in your routine. If you walk with someone or even talk to the neighbors, you can have stimulating conversation with an adult without your children around.
If you decide exercising is not for you, take up a hobby with a group of people. You can find local sewing groups, crocheting, quilting, or even reading groups. You can be intellectual, social, and learn skills. This will take your mind off of your children and help you grow as a person.
If kids are on your mind, you could volunteer at school. There are also organizations that support schooling that you can volunteer with. Volunteering at school does not mean you have to be in the classroom with your child. In fact, if you are a stay at home parent, it would be good for you to volunteer in other areas. The office can usually use help. The library is a great place to showcase your talents. Other teachers could also use help. Let people know that you might be interested in giving your talents and time to the school.
Most people would tell a stay at home parent to get a job. Being a stay at home mom for eight years, I say find a way to work from home if you want a job. Leaving a bookkeeping job and not working for eight years would make almost any employer frown on my credentials. Realistically, the best job a stay at home parent could hope for would be retail or fast food. Of course, that is only if the manager will work around your schedule with getting the kids to and from school, picking them up if they are sick, and staying home when the school has a break. Stay at home jobs could include bookkeeping, hair styling, babysitting, or on-line work. If you want a job, get a job that suits your needs and schedules. Getting a job can get you out of the house and occupy your mind. After all that is your goal.
No matter what you choose to do as a stay at home parent you will always be mom or dad first. Your child will grow up and you need something to do with your time. Even when they are an adult you will still be their parent, but you will need to let them go. Having a hobby, job or something to occupy yourself with will help the transition.
