Stay at Home Wife of a Truck Driver

Ways to Keep the Love Alive

Marie Again
Not every man enters into the world of truck driving out of pure desire. Sometimes it becomes a necessity. Be it out of desperate need for a job of any kind, or just that he needs to provide a better life for his family and his current occupation doesn't pay well enough. It can be very hard on both the husband and wife to keep the ties of love strong between the two when you are seperated for weeks at a time with only a few days together. Here's a few ways to keep those ties close and even grow with each other during absences.

Call each other frequently.

This seems to be obvious. But seriously, invest in a cell phone and call each other for at least a good hour each day. Rehash your days events with each other. Listen to each other. Even if all he has to talk about is truck driving, just listen, even if you don't understand. Remember that he doesn't have anyone to talk to except fellow drivers, which are mostly just men. That can get old for anyone. Dream and plan together during these conversations. Tell him what you would love to do together, like going to Hawaii for vacation, even if it's not a near possiblilty talk about it and plan for it monetarily anyway. It's a great inspiration of hope for fun times and is good in the present tense for having fun in your conversations.

Remember the romance.

Occasionally when he comes home for his couple days off, take a break from the kids and hire a babysitter. Find yourself a nice hotel, and take off for the night. It doesn't have to be fancy or even far away. But taking the night off and going to a romantic dinner together and having completely alone time will reignite the romance that may be hard to have in those few days he's home each month. A great budget alternative is to see if Grandma or another babysitter will take the kids to their home for the night and order in chinese food or goto a newby restaurant together. Remember to treat him like a king for at least this one night. He is working really hard away from you and your family to be able to provide for you.

Make him homecooked meals to take with him.

While your husband is home, be sure to make extra of his favorite meals. This way you can pack and freeze them in take along tupperware. You can get great ones made by Rubbermaid or Ziplock at Walmart that are inexpensive so that if he doesn't bring it back home, it's ok. He'll enjoy having his favorite meals that you made for him while he's out on the road. It'll be the little bit of home that he can charish when all he's been eating are cold sandwiches and chips. Don't forget to hide a sweet note in his meals that you pack too. It'll be a nice surprise that will bring a smile to his face and you'll feel good about it too.

Keeping the love alive just takes little efforts all combined into one to keep you and your husband happy. Take the previous suggestions and adjust them for you and your family, and watch your love grow in these times of loneliness.

I am a mommy, and very proud of it. My little girl is my everything in life right now. I am here on AC to try and get heard by other adults, and in the mean time try and make a little extra cash for our home.  View profile
