Yet, the same people that would criticize stay-at-home dads would be in an uproar if similar accusations were leveled at stay-at-home moms. True, there are a few that believe that anyone who doesn't work outside the home is 'lazy', but for the most part, society feels it's acceptable for moms to be the caretakers. Some even welcome it.
So, why can't such attitudes extend to working dads? They have as much right to stay at home with the kids as moms. In fact, in some situations, the stay-at-home dad is much more practical. Consider families where mom earns more money. Now, dad could get a job, but if he has a different set of skills, the amount of income might not even be worth the effort. This is especially the case after daycare is factored out, (as daycare can cost $600 or more each month). Ultimately, in such a situation, it's less expensive having dad stay at home.
There are also a growing number of dads who are making a living from their computers. Sometimes they end up making more money than dads working outside the home. On top of this, they get a chance to spend more time with their kids, a luxury that is difficult for working dads with outside jobs.
Of course, this is not to say that working at home is perfect, even if a dad is able to make tons of money from his computer. And the reason why is because often times working outside the home gives both men and women social access to other adults. This can help release some of the boredom and tension associated with parenting and working from home.
In conclusion, just because someone is a man doesn't mean they should be forced to work outside of the home. Men are just as capable of taking care of the kids, who end up appreciating the extra time they get to spend with their dads. So, if you are a dad who wants to break the 'tradition' of working outside the home, be proud of yourself and your decision. Within time you will see that it offers many rewards, despite what others might say. Working dads have the same right of choice as moms do when it comes to working at home or working outside the home.

Post a Commentyou make excellent points here. As was said below, support is a key factor.
It is much more difficult for dads who stay at home to find support among their peers and even family members. Hopefully this will get better with time as the trend becomes more accepted.
Great topic and info :)
