Staycationing in Virginia Beach

Orlandrea Wilson

Although experts are saying that we are no longer in a recession, people are still opting to stay close to home when it comes to vacationing. So where can Virginia Beach staycationers go when their beaches and attractions fill up after Memorial Day? Here are a few Virginia Beach staycation options.

Beaches Off The Beaten Path

Everyone who visits Virginia Beach will more than likely go to the oceanfront, which is where a lot of hotels are primarily located. And they will hang out on the main parts of the beach, which are primarily right in front of the three-mile-long boardwalk. So what beaches are off the beaten path? If you are looking to just hang out at the beach for the day, and then head back home later, hang out at the oceanfront past the three-mile-long boardwalk. There is free parking in most areas, and there is a very good chance that any tourists that you will see will be the people who are renting the homes along the beach for longer than a week. Therefore, there is a very small chance of overpopulation on that end of the beach.

If you do not want to try the oceanfront, try Chesapeake Beach, also known as Chicks Beach. This particular beach is also off the beaten path. It is along the Chesapeake Bay with a great view of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel.

Across the water, in Newport News, there is Huntington Park Beach as well as beaches in Norfolk and Hampton. So if the oceanfront is crowded in Virginia Beach, there are plenty of other beaches to visit for some fun in the sun.

Festivals

Virginia Beach has yearly summer festivals that most times, the tourists do not even know about them. So if you are going to staycation in Virginia Beach, why not plan to go to the Pungo Strawberry Festival or the Beer Festival - though some tourists might plan their trip around the Beer Festival. Virginia Beach also has the Neptune Festival, which is the annual celebration of the culture of Virginia Beach, as well as the Funk Fest and Latin Fest just to name a few.

Outdoors

First Landing State Park offers beachfront, hiking trails and even a swamp for those who would like to just be outdoors. There is also Back Bay Wildlife Refuge and False Cape State Park for outdoor fun.

Dining

If you do not feel like cooking on your staycation in Virginia Beach, there are loads of restaurants offering everything from seafood at the Lighthouse Beachside Grille, to Italian Cuisine at Isle of Capri. Or keep it simple and visit any of the restaurant chains close to your home or your destination for the day.

Even though your vacation budget may be a little tight, if you are a resident of Virginia Beach, a staycation right in your own backyard can still be your best vacation yet.
