Staycations: Vacations for Less Money

Be a Tourist in Your Hometown

Snikpooh
In this downward spiraling economy, there are many people who simply cannot afford to take a vacation. However, mentally, everyone is in dire need of a break, time to clear the mind and not think about much of anything. Vacations don't have to cost a fortune. A little bit of research and some creative thinking and can have families on their 'staycation' in no time and with very little cost.

'Staycations' can be a lot of fun. Think about the history of the area. Most people don't realize what happened in their hometown's past. Explore the Internet and find out a little history of the town and surrounding area. Book a room, if it is affordable, in a local hotel and be a tourist for a weekend. See the area through the eyes of an outsider. It is amazing how much a town has to offer that is overlooked by locals.

Visitor's Center

Go to the local visitor's center and pick up brochures on everything there is to do in and around the area. Make a list of these places and any others that come to mind. Beaches, parks, lakes, museums, just to name a few, are all areas that are often overlooked by people who live in an area year round. Now is the time to rediscover them. A few ideas to get started:

Parks: Find out where all the parks in the area are located, pack a picnic lunch and spend a day exploring or just existing as one with nature.

Museums: Small towns might not have literal museums, but chances are that there are other places full of history. Some towns have older, period homes that have tea rooms or are just open for visiting.

Shopping: Everyone goes shopping when it is necessary and the mall is never far away. While on staycation, shop like a tourist. Visit the local shops that feature handmade items or local crafts. Stroll the downtown area and peep in shop windows.

Some towns have more to offer tourists than others, but all towns and cities have history. Make a vacation out of finding out more about it and just being a part of the scenery. Don't give in to the temptation to go home just because it's nearby. This is a 'staycation' and going home is not an option.

Spend time with family and tune out the cares of this world. 'Staycations' are proof that travel is not necessary in order to have a break from day-to-day activities.
