Staying Active in the Winter

Faith Dosier
Cold weather makes it harder for many of us to stay active. As it get colder stay fit can easily take a backseat in favor of anything warm and relaxing. I am horrible at maintaining my fitness through the winter. I usually literally fall off for a good solid month before I say no more sloth!

I get up and force myself out to the gym and change my whole routine so I can feel energized again. That means if you're a runner usually then stop and do something else to make you enjoy it again. I've been doing weights for three years and a change is time. Try you gyms fitness classes for a change but don't just take one but take 3 to four a week to have variety. Yoga is an awesome class and if you've been neglecting your stretching your will really enjoy this slow challenge. 24Hour Fitness and Bally Total Fitness both offer Yoga classes. I've used both gyms yoga trainers and am most impressed with 24 Hour Fitness overall. Yoga is a great activity and you definitely work on your body strength. Another great plus is that it is indoors and quiet and even temperature room.

Another great class for the winter to stay active is any Boot Camp class. Boot Camp is probably one of the hardest and exhausting classes. Everything is fast paced and nonstop just about. The weight really tones your muscles and works them until you get that good burn. By the end of winter with this class you will be chiseled by winters end.

If you've got injuries and need a hard workout but low impact on the joints try you gyms pool classes or take a swim in the pool to streamline your muscles and increase your endurance.

Staying active in the winter is hard sometimes but if you change your routine it'll help you transition to the warmer months without losing the hard body you worked for all summer.
