Staying Alert when Behind the Wheel

Erin Duff
As the holiday season approaches, it's likely that many of us will begin to spend more time in our cars as we travel to the homes of friends and family. However, when you're traveling with little sleep or while stressed, it's important to stay alert while on the road. After all, you don't want to end your trip with a fender bender due to lack of attention!

One good way to stay alert is to travel when you are rested. If you are leaving early in the morning, ensure that you sleep well the night before and that you have the majority of your things in the car or ready to go so that you aren't rushing the next morning. Making sure you are able to get enough sleep and are rested will help your trip begin on a high note, rather than feeling rushed and anxious.

Traveling with others can help you remain alert, as you can both look for potential road hazards and other signs of trouble. If you're feeling a little tired, you can talk to your traveling companion in order to stay energized, and share stories along the way. It's helpful when you need to catch your second wind!

If you notice you're getting tired, it's time to pull over. You may need something to eat, coffee, or to get out and stretch for a few minutes. Just walking around after being in a car for a few hours can be energizing in and of itself, and can help you be prepared for the rest of your trip. It's recommended that you pull over and rest for 10 minutes for every 50 minutes you drive, but that's not always realistic. Either way, it is helpful and will make you feel more alert and ready to start your trip again.

Another way to get some extra energy is to turn on the radio and listen to your favorite music. Bring your iPod and listen to music that keeps you energized. That is one of the best ways that I am able to stay active and alert on long road trips, as the music keeps me engaged in driving and keeps my energy up.

Watch out for things that can take your attention away from the road. Don't talk on your cell phone unless it's necessary, don't text message, check e-mail/Twitter/Facebook, don't apply your makeup, or eat a sandwich while driving. Your attention needs to be on the road in order for you to remain as alert as possible.

Make the most of your road trip and follow the tips above for staying alert during your trip. This will help you ensure that your holiday is as stress-free as possible, and that you can arrive safely to your location.
