Staying Healthy During Winter Travel

Ethan Roberts
The holidays are a time to enjoy the comforts of tradition in the company of those we love. Unfortunately, those we love love are not always conveniently located. As a result, many of us will find ourselves traveling great distances this holiday season in pursuit of our family and friends. While traveling is often a hazardous activity, several simple steps can be taken to increase your chances of reaching your destination safely, and in good health.

Dress in Layers

Rapid changes in climate are the hallmark of winter travel. Whether you're walking down a jetway or filing up at the gas station, there will invariably come a time when you're exposed to the elements. Layering allows you to control for this variation in temperature, and remain comfortable throughout your entire trip. No only will this make your traveling more enjoyable, but it will also reduce the chances that your trip will be spoiled by a sudden cold or case o the flu.

Stay Clean

This one is simple, and and goes a long way towards keeping you healthy. Make sure to keep all the toiletries you need to keep yourself fresh assessable at all times. Pack hand sanitizer, and make sure you have more than enough clothing for the entire trip. Compromising on personal hygiene puts you on a slippery slope towards sickness.

Try To Maintain Your Standard Diet

It's not always easy to eat well while on the road, but a small amount of effort can go a long way. Try opting for a salad instead of a double cheese burger. Nothing will help you get sick faster than malnutrition. If a proper diet is absolutely impossible, try bringing vitamin supplements along. While they are not quite as good for you as their natural brethren, they are an acceptable substitute.

Don't Drink The Water!

It's laughable, but true. If you don't know where you are, stay away from the tap. Nothing ruins spoils holiday fun quite like dysentery. Carry around plenty of bottled water just in case. The same holds true for food. Many roadside dives have less than reputable health standards. If a place looks dirty, don't eat there.
