One of the main precautions when swimming in a lake or river is making sure there are no unseen obstacles such as rocks or submerged tree limbs to hurt yourself on if you are diving from the bank or shore. An adult should check for these potential dangers before a child can jump in and possibly injure themselves. It is also a good idea to swim with a life preserver, as undercurrents can pull even the most experienced swimmer under. During Summer, I constantly read about people drowning because they think they are great swimmers, not knowing whats under the water or the power of the undercurrents.
If you are drinking alcohol, do not go into the water or let children you are responsible for go into the water. I know when people start drinking they get that "I can do anything" attitude. Its been proven time and again that people are more prone to drown when they are under the influence of alcohol. It's no different than drinking and driving and it's really important to think about this when children are involved.
When the temperatures start to rise it is essential that you drink plenty of fluids. The best beverage to drink when it is extremely hot outside is water. I know that an ice cold beer or soda sounds really good when it's hot, but the soda is filled with salt that will only make you more thirsty and the alcohol, as I've already pointed out is not a responsible drink unless you plan on not swimming. I know this sounds redundant but it is very important.
Shade trees can do wonders when it's hot outside, but don't take for granted you will always be able to find enough shade. In other words, wearing a hat could save you from getting a sunburn on your face and head. Also remember to bring along some tanning lotion. Most tanning lotions protect your skin from harmful rays.
Here is one very important note for people who are watching the children. If they are near the water, do not turn away for a second. Accidents can happen in the blink of an eye. I've heard people say they only turned away for a split second and the child either went into the water or wandered away to chase the family dog. You never know what a child will do when you turn your back. Especially the very young ones.
Another important issue is to obey the signs about trespassing. If the sign says "DO NOT SWIM" or something to that effect, the sign is there for a reason. It's not just someone being mean. They are trying to keep you safe. You will see signs like this around canals. Canals may seem fun to swim in but they are very dangerous, too.
Summertime can be a fun and enjoyable time if everyone stopped to think of a new way to be safe, so take into account these safety tips and try to come up with a few of your own. Have a safe and happy Summer.
