Staying Warm in Disaster Situations

Teresa (Tracey) Stanisha
Winter and all its wonders can cause a lot of problems. When you are the victim of the unfortunate disaster that can at times affect us all in the midst of the winter months, then you need to know some things that can help you get by. Read on to find out some tips that might help you to get through a winter disaster and stay sane at the same time.

If the snow hits hard and you can't get out and you lose power, which means heat and other necessities that you need, there are some things that you can do. When the power goes out and does not go back on for hours you need to remove the food from the fridge and place it outside. The snow and cold become a built in fridge and that can mean the difference in a whole of ruined food or saving all of it. Even milk and other beverages will freeze verses being spoiled and that can keep you nourished for a while when you are snowed in and can't get to a store to replenish your items. You can also count on other items to stay good when they are being kept cold by the winter temperatures. Also to consider, you might want to throw out eggs, bacon and anything that might have been older in your fridge, though. You should also be sure that you put the items from the fridge in a cooler to protect the food from the animals that might be lurking around that are hungry, too.

Another great tip for when you are without power and heat in the cold, winter months is to boil hot water in large pots. You can use this to warm your hands and feet. It is like having a small fire in your home that will not hurt anything. You can also consider boiling small pebbles and stones as these will retain heat longer and give you some heat in the home, too. When you are using the pots for heat, be sure that you wear protective gear as in gloves and socks when putting your hands and feet near the heat source. It can work wonders and will also heat up the rest of the room a little bit, too.

Getting through a disaster in the winter months is tough. Make sure that you always have a radio with plenty of batteries, many flashlights on hand and a lot of candles. You will definitely need them. If you can find a generator this will also help with keeping you warm if a disaster strikes.

One other idea is to never stop thinking of different things to do to help you get through a tough time in the winter. The more that you think and write things down by the light of a flashlight or candle the more ideas you will think of and you will get through it. Winter is the toughest time when disasters hi, so be as prepared as possible and if it does happen, try and remain calm and try not to worry. Help is surely on its way and sooner or later the sun will come out again and the roads will be cleared so that you can get where you need to go or you will have power and heat restored.
