Just thinking about eating at a steak house makes many people's mouth water. Choosing healthy items from the menu however involves knowing a little more about what is available than just if we like it or not. You can choose a healthy meal from the steak house menu. Portion size is important and most menus offer cuts of meat in several sizes. Choosing the right portion can make a big difference in the overall caloric value of your meal. The sides you choose also make a difference in the overall nutritional content of your meal. I have included information about menu choices from three well know steak houses: Long Horn Steak House, Outback and Applebee's.

A healthy meal at Outback may consist of: a House Salad with Tangy Tomato dressing which contains 278.2 calories, 30.6 g carbs, 14.6 g total fat and 7.1 g protein. A meal at Applebee's which consists of Asiago Peppercorn Steak: 7 oz sirloin grilled and topped with cracked peppercorn and melted Asiago cheese is served with steamed herb potatoes and seasonal vegetables is under 550 calories, less than 65 g total fat and 300 g carbs.
