Stealing Ideas from the Assignment Desk

And Making Them Work for You!

Abby Greenhill
Ok, we all know that the 'Assignment Desk' sometimes has requests that totally don't fit. Well, I'm here to tell you that you can make them fit, as long as you don't try to submit them through the Assignment Desk template!

An example of a current choice from the Assignment Desk is - Do you know someone who has been on "Survivor"? No, I don't, but I am a survivor. Every day when I get up, get dressed and make it through without getting hurt or worse, I'm a survivor. Anyone who has beaten the odds against cancer is a survivor. If you are living on less money but still managing to make it, then you are a survivor. We can all write similar stories about surviving. See, just switch up the words a little and write your own article.

The next one that made me laugh is - Did you grow up friends with a cast member from any season of "The Real World"? Ok, no I didn't but I live in the real world. What happens on the TV show "The Real World" is about as real as silicon implants. Real is writing articles that we hope will earn us a few dollars. Real is watching your kids grow up happy and safe. Real is hoping that some day human beings learn not to hate. Real is trying to save money for a rainy day, and there are lots of them. Real is trying to make $10 stretch from here to tomorrow.

Continuing on, another choice is - Did you grow up friends with a cast member from "Jersey Shore"? I grew up with actual friends who spent summers on the Jersey Shore. In Jersey we didn't say lets to go the Jersey Shore...we know its Jersey! Going to the "Shore" is sufficient. The girls on "Jersey Shore" give Jersey, and the Shore, a bad name!

Here's a favorite, Best Sports Treasure you Own. Ok, that I can do that but not 400 words on one treasure, but all three of them combined add to the total word count.

I own three photographs, all autographed. Each one is important to me:

* One is from Red Auerbach. I was a huge Boston Celtics fan and someone got it for me directly from Red. Of course it's him smoking one of his famous cigars!

* Another is Danny Ainge. When I started watching pro basketball in the mid-80's the Celtics were just past their prime but I watched anyway. I was told how fantastic Bird was, but I had my eyes on the little devil, Danny Ainge. Sure, he played a little dirty once in a while, but so did most of them. When he went to Sacramento I was not a happy camper and I sent him a fan letter. He was kind enough to personally type me a letter, and also sent a photo. The fun part about the letter, he had not gotten his Sacramento letterhead, so he used Celtics paper!

* The last one is an autographed photo of Earl Weaver, Manager of the Baltimore Orioles. Growing up in Baltimore I was a Birds fan, and even when we moved to New Jersey my family remained true to Maryland and Maryland sports. I couldn't wait to watch a game just to see Weaver in action. When he turned the bill of his baseball cap to the back, you knew someone was gong to get it! He did put on quite a show!

There you have it. Borrow a word or phrase from the Assignment Desk and then make it work for you!

Interesting suggestion! I think I've actually done this a couple times, but without realizing it.
