What is Steampunk?
It is a culture based on romantic science fiction set, mostly, in the Victorian age. Some of the most fascinating works of literature ever written are associated with Steampunk such as: Mary Shelley's," Frankenstein", Jules Vern's, "Journey to the Center of the Earth," and H.G. Wells' "War of the Worlds."
Fashion is also a strong component of the Steampunk culture. Followers are captured by the allure of Victorian couture. Gone are the days of bustles, rustling skirts, and abundant lace. Yet, Steampunk keeps them alive, reinvented, with a modern flair. Many Steampunk designers are emerging on the scene such as: Ami Nyitray Designs, Berit New York, and Kristin Costa.
Unique items are associated with the Steampunk culture as well. They are mainly items of a specific era of the Industrial age. Steam power was available but electricity was not yet widely spread. Think dirigibles, time machines, and airships.
If you haven't encountered Steampunk in Dumbo, yet, keep your eyes open. You just might spy some fascinating things.
Till next time, Dumbo.
