Steed's Dairy

Agritourism is a way to attract visitors to agricultural areas mainly for education and recreational purposes. Many farmers, especially small, family-owned farms must supplement their business and explore other ways of generating income. This is the case at Steed's Dairy located outside of Augusta, Ga in Columbia County.

The Steed Family has a three part vision that has started this year with the opening of the corn maize. The next phase is The Market at Steed's Dairy where local farmers could sell their goods and the dairy farm could sell milk. Phase three includes opening The Creamery at Steed's Dairy and would produce and sell milk, cheese, and ice cream.

As opposed to having a disconnect as to where products 'come from', this family is inviting everyone out to be a part of it. I am not sure how many people knew that Columbia County had a dairy farm prior to the corn maze being opened. Now because of social networking and great family entertainment the Steed Family is getting their name out there which hopefully guarantees their success in future endeavors. The integrity of the farm is intact and families are being shown and taught about agriculture. Private tours to school children are being held as well.

As a parent, I support family friendly entertainment. The corn maize also includes a hay ride where you can see the beautiful land and cattle in the fields, a jumping pillow that the kids love, a petting zoo, and play areas with slides that the kids, teenagers, and adults all love.

As a neighbor, I support local agriculture. I would love to see this family succeed and keep their farm running as opposed to selling the land and bringing in housing developments.

As a nutritionist, I support the goal of selling local, hormone free milk.
